Me and my father have this spike running around our land and we we're curious if anybody could tell how old he is. this is the best picture i can find during the day that we haven't deleted.
my words exactly.Old enough to be delicious with bbq sauce.
I would say 2ish years. Maybe a little younger.
Bag him and have the DNR check his jaw they will tell you exactly. And then you get venison![]()
If there was a good wet spring and summer yeah. But Ive seen dry summers turn dominant monster bucks into fork horns. He is no older than two at the most probably born the spring before last due to the angle of his belly and rear flank.
I would say next year he will no longer be a spike!
If he is there is a genetic defect and should be shot before he passes the genes on. When they get to be three and are still spikes (We call them Dork Deer) We cull them from the group. We do not shoot one and two year spikes.

There ya go. While spike deer is usualy tender, it depends. If they had a rough year, they may be like an old doe.1.5 years old-let him live 2 more years and you will have something worth shooting
