SKS,,Whats your take on replacing rear sight with rail or changing receiver cover opting for one with a rail?

Much as Im talking ,i love the idea of dressing up but not too much to a rediculos level,,but modetnizations ie rails ,,picatinny for say weapon light,,or picatinny or weaver replacing the rear original sight..lots of which also have passage between to still use front sight, ive seen a 4 or 5 inch one as to not fully cover the ejecting of shellarea i mean not to say have some huge scope fully covering it which some come with shell deflectors but perhaps a shorter scope or even red dot optic. And or opting for another receiver cover with a rail or some design with further support as to not have wiggle making it solidly stationary, most like this have additional tie downs or sorts set screws on each side nc star has one and few thers..have also heard of the longer rail from the receiver cover all the way to just befor the rear sght states you lose the use of stripper clips but if youve converted the 10 round non removable factory mad and gone with the duck bill who cares,,,and all this still dressing somewhat the wood stock either the original or another more modern wood stock...Whats your thoughts????

Yep as ive seen,,,this mount that you have did you have to drill holes of some sort to have a attachment spot,,,I want seriously what works but im trying hard to not have to drill holes but if it comes to that,,are you talkn a mount similar to what the ak has a mount for scopes ? I shall investigate

Yes, I had to drill holes it was the "AK style" rail.

Looks like there are more options since I did it..... heres one that looks promising, but you have to remove the rear takedown pin for the top cover.

I have one of those replacement top covers that has the rail on it. It works fine but the SKS is not much of a platform for any kind of accuracy. I have never seen one that would shoot better than may 4 inches, so I usually leave the scope off. My SKS has matching numbers including that dust cover, so I usually leave it on the gun.

I have 7.62 x39 guns in the AK, AR, Mini 30 and Mauser bolt action and they all are pretty accurate, so the SKS is just a historical fun gun for me. But if you want to scope it or put a red dot on it, those are the only way to go, IMHO

kno whut u mean and i was looking into the removal of the rear sight to replace with a ebay rail fitting for the sks but didnt have too much luck does work but looking thru a red dot optic or scope that requires a eye relief the view is literally closted to maybe a quarter of a inch although i thing theres a either vortex or primary arms i think or maybe its abother brand that offers zero eye relief required so decided to jus put my rear sight back on because i recall when i first loaded and emptied mags jus using its irons,,,i was like dud i was at like maybe 50 yards not that far but thing hit dead square on ,,,without a scope or optic period,,,literally like the round went straight to where i pointed the front sight ,,i was like woahhh! lol and here i was going for the look of the scope or optic,,,though i still like the look of a scope i think if i do such as the picture you provided yep ive seen em ncstar offers them not bad priced either i think 28 to 30 bucks,,i can afford that ,,i like the idea of the extra support screws to stabize it further to kep it from moving a scope in this position on the sks is ideal because your eye relief is right there,,though cheek rise might have to be developed . im looking to take this thing as a distance shooter scenerio the others i have ar115 are better formated better prepped for optic and or scope more idea for close quarter stuff...still might go with bubbaerin this thing ,,i cant shake the idea of frakensteining this thing,,taking it to a hubrid styled next century kinda life,,,but will keep the wood just incase i wanna sell it and take it back to factory but sell sks,,,hmm not likely only one sks in my book...

BadAce makes a scope mount that attaches where the rear leaf sight mounts. It requires a long eye relief scope (scout scope). It also has a long thin shell deflector to keep the cases from dinging the scope. It's kind of ugly, but it works and you don't have to worry about the dust cover mount looseness issue.

They also have a couple of different mounts for the same position for putting a red dot on it, which given it's relatively poor accuracy in general, is probably a better choice.

Scout scope mount: SKS Scout Scope Mount for Long Eye Relief scope Gen 2

Red dot mounts: SKS low-profile NDT red dot mount Gen 3 with back-up sight

I agree with the red dot suggestion. Those replacement dust covers are made too large and have to be filed to fit. We bought 2 and know that to be accurate. So, there should be no looseness of the dust cover. We found that the very cheap dot sights work very well on them. I have some that just snap on or off and they have worked just fine for about 15 years now. I have one with a green smiley face that works very well. In fact, on rifles I like them better than the expensive ones for handguns and cost $100 up.

I have a couple of the cheap Amazon red dots, one is similar to the one you posted. They work just fine on various firearms. Really the only draw back is that they're not weather proof or as rugged like a brand name. One self-destructed from recoil (I think I paid $24 for it, or something like that). For $45 you can even get them that look like Eotechs.

I use iron sights mostly, Mojo, Williams, Tech and have one importer installed mount a T89 on a Cowboys Companion.

The cover mounts are notorious for not holding zero unless you do this mod from Survivors {accessories, scope mounts, reply #14 from 1mlt - won't let me post the link). Also if you go with a cover mount you want it to be as low as possible, like this (Katieboots, Gunboards)

so you don't need a "chin weld". See through mounts are a waste. I have a Magwedge type (bolt on) and a Choate (D&T) if interested PM me. PAX

,though cheek rise might have to be developed
The cheek rest I installed on this rifle is off-set to accommodate the scopes left off-set. It has Velcro under it. PAX

I must have tried every SKS type of optic mount available, all have their problems apart from this....

The original sights still work with the red dot in place, just don't turn it on.

I also have a Choate mount that's never been used mainly because it requires D&T, a permanent mod. I might install it if/when I come across the next Chinese mix master SKS. I'm wantin to build a faux Drag like this, that will use a drum or duckbill mags and a bipod. I have a Choate Drag also (which is lighter), but this modded ATI is my test mule stock. PAX
