My daughter is an elementary school teacher in Connecticut and, when I asked her what the procedures were in a lock-down situation she said they march the kids to the back of the classroom and lock the doors. When I asked if there were any armed employees for defense in case of a Columbine High School like scenario she said you can’t posses a firearm in a school zone. That conversation was in September, three months before the Sandy Hook School shootings. Nothing has changed to enhance school security since December.

Unfortunately, the recent flurry of new laws enacted by politicians seeking photo oppertunities over meaningful effective legislation do nothing to prevent another Sandy Hook School like incident from occurring in the future. Those new laws do however impose stricter restrictions on law abiding citizens' Second Amendment rights. It makes me wonder if the politicians have any true interest in school security or if their only concern is in using the tragedy as an opportunity to drive their political ideology of restrictive gun laws.

 

I agree 100% with you. It's sickening. More people like us should be speaking up. So what do they do after they pass all these laws and another tragedy happens again? *shaking my head*

I don't, nor would anyone on this forum, advise you to have confidence in a pen or a set of keys as a weapon. If you are still in school you must be young. I think the best thing you can do for yourself is mentally prepare for a bad situation. Realize that concealment is different than hard cover. Concealment may hide you, but in the event of a shooting, you're going to want to be behind something able to stop, or at least slow down a bullet. Be aware of how your school is laid out in the event you need to escape. Many people have died trying to be a hero. If you have a way out, then get out and alert others to what is happening so they can escape too. It's unfortunate that most schools do not have armed guards. But, until they do, just rehearse in your mind the quickest and safest way to exit the area. Pull a fire alarm too if you can't get to a phone. The police usually show up with the fire trucks and, if they don't already know, you can inform them there is an active shooter. I hope you or anyone you know never has to be involved in a school tragedy. But since you can't have a means of defending yourself, like I said, I would focus on your best plan of escape. Breaking an ankle jumping out a second story window is much better than being shot. Stay safe.

The same places the ones at most of the schools in my state come from. The local police force and private security contractors. Nearly every school in my state has either an armed resource officer (local police) or private security.

You definetly cannot carry a knife into a school nowadays. And how is using ketchup packets to simulate a grave injury, BEFORE being actually shot, a good idea? Remember, at columbine, the shooters methodically killed students who were already injured and begging for their life. I'll agree with you on one point though. There are companies now that make backpacks out of Kevlar with a pocket that holds a ballistic plate.

These people are against guns... period.

They will restrict us as much as they can. Unfortunely, they do not care about criminals, because they know they will continue to break laws. As a matter of fact, whenever a mass shooting occurs, it is the perfect opportunity for politicians to use a political excuse to disarm law abiding citizens.. that's the ultimate goal.

 

My partner works for the phone company and sometimes has jobs inside schools- she walks right in, no "buzzing in". tries to figure out where the office is-wondering all around until she finds it- the secretary then TELLS her where the phone room is, instead of walking her there, off she goes wondering the halls again unsupervised! It's so sad isn't it. I mean, I knew the liberals were blind, but this is so crazy its hard to believe! Why would anyone of sane mind vote for someone who does nothing to protect the kids?

When I was teaching night classes, the community college hired some full-time officers and filled in with part-time, off-duty police officers from local forces. They were generally very professional.

It's the Rham Emanuel liberal rule of politics: "You never let a serious crisis go to waste. And what I mean by that it's an opportunity to do things you think you could not do before”. Immediately following the Sandy Hook School tragedy, I mean within a few hours, liberal politicians were screaming for tighter gun control laws. This before they had any idea what actually happened. It was abundantly clear at that time when Diane Feinstein, Michael Bloomberg and Richard Blumenthal of the political elites marched in step with a new found stimulant to take advantage of this tragedy to promote their political agenda.

I am always disgusted every time I go pick up my son. He is in middle school. Every time I go there is a sign that says "If this door is locked call this number to be let in." My son has had some severe dental problems. He has lock jaw. I was picking him up once every 2 weeks or so. I probably pulled on that door handle at least 10 times. It has been locked once! There is not a resourse officer at the school. But there is a sheriffs deputy sitting out front every morning and afternoon writing speeding tickets! I get the tickets are a revenue generator. As soon as the flashing light for the lowered speed limit turns off the deputy leaves. Again I say "Disgusting!"

 

My high school and middle schoolers both told me they would LIKE to have an armed presence at their schools. All this school shooting stuff gets the kids to thinking too

OK just here you woldent get a job near a school before being vetted. Just because you were in Afghanistan or elsewhere doesn't qualify you to guard children some come home with mental problems etc.

True, and I know there are some with LEO experience that went into teaching. With a little additional training and set rules it would not be difficult to establish a security individual at each and every school. That could either be a teacher, administrator, service personnel or hired employee exclusively for that purpose.

It is my belief that if that security requirement was in place back in December, Adam Lanza would never have even attempted to enter the Sandy Hook School. He was a sociopath and would not have initiated a confrontation if he had any doubt that he could not have complete control of the situation.

 

I had a job in the recent past, in air and water balance that had me working almost exclusively in schools and I noticed the same thing. Never once was a door locked, just a sign saying 'visitors check in at office'. Was the same no matter the school, elementary, high school or college. I was able to just walk in unchecked every single time. If I'd have had evil on my mind, I could have EASILY done some serious damage. To me, it's unacceptable that we keep our material valuables under lock and key...sometimes gun...yet the most innocent and precious resource is the most vulnerable.

I suppose I get the whole guns in school argument...I guess...but damn how about some freakin' common sense here!! We lock our houses when we leave, we lock our car doors when we park but leave a school WIDE OPEN and yet nothing is being done about it!?!?! I guess a law has to be passed before a door can be locked...unacceptable

Not like a secure door is a foolproof deterrent but if someone can waltz right in, or just break some glass and have at it unchallenged, that's a BIG problem...

 

Excellent post...the media n politicians n everyone else points the fingers at firearms blah blah blah...I have a 3 month old daughter I'd rather have better school security than for guns to be outlawed anyday. Doing so will not solve the issue with protecting our children! Security in schools is the answer, anyone can walk in and do something harmful and it is sickening and very horrifying to think about!

 

I'm thankful this thread has grown. It's nice to see so many sane people in agreement. Keep fighting the good fight. I hope that if a "shtf" scenario ever happens, we can all meet like minded people and protect our families together. I'm proud to be on the good guys side.

One such vet is a local LEO and a firearms instructor (and a generally good guy, IMO); he was recently diagnosed with the PTSD. Docs told him that he would've noticed it sooner, but he went into policework where it is less troublesome/noticeable. I'd let that guy watch kids in a heartbeat; they would be very well protected.
