allow hollow points to be carried. talking 45ACP, 9mm and 357 magnum/38 special.

Not a problem at all. Just go to a full meplat or something like a semi wadcutter and go to the fastest bullet you can get. I also find that for reloads I can take a soft lead bullet and powder coat it. I can then fling it at 1,250-1,300 fps withut leading. But it is still soft lead when it hits, a good thing. I do not worry about such issues at all.

In the 40 SW, 400 Corbon and 10mm, I load the 135 flat nose bullets to 1,380 fps, I load the 155 grain flat nose jacketed bullets in the range of 1,250 fps or more. We even found the Berry's Bullets work pretty well when you exceed their design speck, which is 1,250 fps.

Not an issue in my mind.

Buffalo Bore loads many of their cartridge options hotter. And they've got a number of "hard cast" options for deeper penetration (through tougher winter gear, bigger animals, etc). Might be an option, if you still want a hard-hitting round but want to avoid being branded a criminal if you dare touch JHP.

Extreme Penetrator

or Extreme Defense

I personally carry the Extreme Defense in 10mm; it's a 115 gr 10mm at 1700 fps

EDIT: Just an FYI; Underwood uses Lehigh Defense bullets in their ammo and sell for less than buying from Lehigh Defense. The 90 gr 9mm travels at 1475 fps

Bullets with a flat face (flat meplat?),,,
Are more effective in causing a bleeding wound.

It's kind of like wadcutters that cut a clean hole in paper targets,,,
Rather than round nose poking that small ragged hole.

In fact, many learned folk recommend using wadcutters in revolvers,,,
They cut a wound channel that promotes bleeding,,,
Rather than the self-sealing hole from a RN.

Just ensure your pistol will feed them properly,,,
It's my understanding that some pistols don't like flat nose bullets.

Probably Joisey. You would have to check but I carry Norma NXD in my Hellcat. 9mm 65 grain fluted bullet. It uses hydraulics instead of expansion. Inceptor ARX, Black Hills Honey Badger and Underwood Xtreme Defender are similar. 45ACP would be 118-135 grains. Significant recoil reduction. Penetration usually runs 18" in jell.

You could try the Underwood Extreme Defender, the flying Philips Head Screwdriver.

Edit to add, I got beat to the punch on that one.

Just for information I got this response from Hornady.
Thank you for your question. The Hornady Critical Defense and Critical Duty lines are not technically considered traditional hollow point bullets. They feature the Flex Tip (FTX) technology, which is a polymer tip inserted into the bullet that initiates consistent expansion while preventing clogging. It's important to check with your local state laws to determine if these specific types of ammunition are legal, as regulations can vary from state to state. Thank you.

I live in Florida, we can probably carry radioactive, exploding incendary bullets. (just teasing) Never shoot someone with an incendiary bullet. It cauterizes as it goes through, and He won't bleed a drop! Why just last month I was in a bar with a guy that got shot through the belly with an incenidary he was doing a trick where he passed a rope through the hole in his belly. (A Babtist preacher once told me that a small lie was as bad as a big one, so I only tell whoppers. It is like a free upgrade on your value meal)

I carry a 1911 and I only load ball anyway. On the rare occasions that I carry a 9MM or a .38, I do load hollow-points. I am an old man and I have not suffered any negative consequences from my bad habits. When I die, never being involved in a gunfight, my wife will have good reason to gripe over all the money I wasted.

I carried ball ammo in 45 and 38 and 9 mm in the US and elsewhere and every mission was in harms way because every mission was protecting VIPs who were targets of terrorism. Our Car 15s used whatever military ball was in use at the time.

With the 38 we were taught that 38 ball one hit was s 60 percent stopper, 2 hits made 90 percent, so 2 rounds always. The training was 2 to the torso the third to the head. One of our guys did stop a terrorist attack with a 3 inch J frame. Two terrorists were chasing the 2 Americans, both armed with Uzzis. My buddy shot him twice at about 20 feet, he said in the sternum. I have seen him shoot, if he said sternum, it was sternum. The ammo back then was the 130 grain ball, I think they call them the Q load.

Being hit the bad guy went full auto with his Uzzi fell and spun around hitting the other bad guy. Bob and the other guy I did not know, went around a corner and never looked back, exiting the building and running for their lives. They buried their handguns and IDs, blended into the people and made their way to a friendly embassy and moved out of country, one of them then assigned to work for me. You will not find reports of matters like that because the people involved were there for classified purposes.

The military, CIA and State Department has a large database of gun fight reports, historically with ball ammo. I do not think any one else does. Anytime an international event like that happens a flash report goes to key players including the White House so the pres does not get surprised if the media finds out about the gun play. Then a detailed report will follow. So they know what guns and ammo did what. Today even the military can use hollow points so they have lots of data to compare. The CIA and State Department Security folks have used hollow points since 1979 that I know personally. So they have lots of data to compare.

My point? I also carried as my personal CCW an Officer's Model 45 with ball ammo. If hollow points are banned in a state I am not concerned at all. If my choice is 9 mm, same story, I just go to the 147 grain with a flat meplat.

I am of the same mindset as you. I have JHP in my 9 mm, Talons in my 40 and Golden Sabres in my 45. But I can live with Ball ammo in any of them. I think we worry too much.

Read the rules NJ.you can possess hollow points for hunting in certain weapons. pistols are required to fire non -expanding rounds. Got a friend that lives NJ and he really doesn’t know the laws , because they are really that confusing. i will never take a gun into NJ from Pa because they have no tolerance for out of state folks.

The Jersey Coast is the closest place for me to go saltwater fishing. That’s the only reason I go there. I like to go to Upstate New York for salmon fishing too. Don’t get near the cities, and NY and NJ pretty nice places.
