Recently I did a review of cold bluing products and in that review I included corrosion resistance but used only BC Barricade. I stated that I intend to do a review of a variety of gun-centric rust inhibitors. Im amassing (my wife says hoarding) quite a stock pile of CLP products focusing on the “P” aspects. To that end I want to make sure I have a comprehensive list of products gun owners might use to stave off rust on their firearms so Im coming to you for suggestions of which products I should secure for this evaluation. Ive scrubbed the store shelves of Gander and Cabelas and Bass Pro and Farm and Fleet and Fleet Farm as well as online outlets for rust inhibitors that cant easily be found. Id like to do a side by side evaluation of about 15 or 20 products and want to know what everybody uses to keep your gun rust free. I figure that by the time I buy the most common 15 or so that would cover the lion’s share of what the average guy uses.

Im focusing on manufactured/commercial brands and wont be evaluating home brews or gunsmith “secret recipes”. So please list em up and tell me that no evaluation would be complete without including brand “X”. I plan to post this request in a few different areas on the forum to attract as many suggestions as possible because some guys are hunters an others are only target shooters or only waterfowl hunt but don’t deer hunt so if you see it multiple times you need only reply in one thread. Thanks for your help.

Dropping duplicate threads like this in 4 or 5 different forums is a good way to annoy moderators...and members for that matter.
    One forum just wasn't enough?

I like to use Mobile One, or Castol synthetic oil for my protectant and lube. Seems to stay put pretty well, can buy it at reasonable prices by the quart or what is left over after an oil change top-up. a quart or even the remnants go a long way as a gun oil. I've never used a bottle up just on gun maintenance. The oil always ends up getting used up on a vehicle. Next car oil change remnants top up my gun oil bottle.

I just use CLP to clean and lubricate my guns. To be honest it is the NC weather and a well sealed home that keeps my guns rust free. The CLP is just an insurance policy.

When I lived along the gulf coast it took a lot more effort to keep my guns rust free.

Safariland Break Free CLP & Rem Oil, works well and keeps them rust free. They are also stored with descant packs in the gun cabinet and safe.

I use Breakfree CLP, RemOil, and Froglube paste. All are fantastic products, but froglube is the best of the three for lube and protection. CLP does wonders on nasty SKS bores after 300 rounds of Tula garbage.

I just use breakfree clp. Wood stocks get removed and the gun sprayed down from the handy aerosol cans if stored for a long time.

I don't store guns in wet damp clp works great.

    Break Free CLP.

so how are we helping you now Mr. DIY GUY. I know you said we need only post once, but I think that quite a few of us use the P of CLP.

I have seen plenty of L (Lube) recipes from folks, including straight mobile one. Most of these posts don't address any attempt to P.

I use 30w non detergent motor oil or tetra gun grease for lube depending on on use and need. My ccw guns get grease as I don't want oil leaking into my clothing.

Sorry for the confusion. I had posted this topic in seveal locations (they have since been merged here) I hoped to explain that if you posted in one of my threads you didnt need to post in the other threads on the same topic I had posted on other pages. Post up as many times as you like. And yes Im focusing on "P" protecting guns, tools, autos, fishing, etc from rust so Im interested in rust inhibitors more than I am lubes or cleaners.

I've found that most synthetic motor oils provide plenty of the "P" as well as the "L". They may not be as well suited to the cleaning duties directly, but I have found that cleanup seems pretty fast with a good solvent like Hoppes or Shooters Choice, if the gun had synthetic oil on it before shooting.

I use standard 'gun oil' or '3-in-1' oil.

Based on posts and PM’s here and on other sites where I made the same request, I begun to generate a list of the rust inhibitors that I will secure for this evaluation. The product list thus far is. In no particular order

    G96 CLP

    Eezox gun care

    M-Pro 7

Gun Slick Gun Seal Rust preventative

    Breakfree CLP

    Frog Lube

    Ballistol

    Birchwood Casey Barricade

    Rem oil (with Moistureguard)

    Rem oil (regular)

    Shooters Choice Rust Prevent

    Strike Hold

    Viking tactics Rand CLP

Hornady One Shot Gun Cleaner & Dry Lube

    Clenzoil

    WD-40 (blue and yellow can)

    WD-40 specialist Corrosion inhibitor

Fluid Fill Rust and corrosion protection

    MILTECH-1

    Hoppe’s Lubricating oil (with weatherguard)

    Hoppe’s MDL (Moisture Displacing Lubricant)

    Hoppe’s Elite gun oil

    3-In-One oil

    Pennzoil synthetic oil

Im sure the list will grow. Additional suggestions welcomed

Time to break out the credit card. Based on web searches, the shipping on some of this stuff is nearly as high as the product itself. This may end up costing a small fortune but I will have a lifetime supply of gun care products when Im finished.

i use to use RemOil and still do on occasion when i want a light oil for protection, but started using Lucas Gun Oil several years ago because it was bit thicker and lasted longer.
