...what would it take?
And what would be a ballpark cost?
IF the extractor worked (it might), new barrel (custom) $250 or so. Custom mag - $100+ each.
I could be wrong but I'd be willing to bet the .45 extractor wouldn't work-you'll need a .40 slide & a rechambered .40 barrel. Then you would need a custom recoil spring as well as a stretched .40 mag. It would be cheaper to just go with a .40 to begin with.
I have not looked at the breechface of the XDm to see if it would work with the 10mm.
I know that the 1911 has a different breechface for the 10mm and a 10mm will not align correctly for the firing pin to strike the primer correctly in a .45 slide.
breach face will not dictate the firing pin strike. The barrel to striker channel relationship will. extractor will likely need to be replaced to insure proper functioning. Slide may need to be reworked slightly to allow better purchase on the 10mm case. .45 mags MIGHT work but will likely have reliabilty issues as the feed lips will be too wide and allow the rounds to sit very high, if they hold properly at all. Bending the feed lips down and in MIGHT work. OAL is the same. If you plan on shooting full power 10mm ammo, you will want to upgrade to a 22-24# spring.
Right on Dan. Breach face diameter seems to me to be the bigger problem.
Yep, look into a 400 corbon conversion instead, all you need is a barrel. They run about $160 at EFK Firedragon. And like the guys already mentioned, you may want to change the spring.
There are 10mm mags available for the 1911. I bought a Colt 10mm mag which fits and functions perfectly in my Dan Wesson 1911. I'm able to shoot 40 cal by changing the barrel and recoil spring.
I think the length of the 10mm might require a different slide.
Deadman1, Is yours a 400 Corbon, if so how do you like it?
The barrel lugs on the 1911 10mm barrel will not fit the 1911 .45ACP slide, but I though this thread was on the XDm.
breech face woukld be smaller. .40 mags could be made to work./
