The first true XD compact from Springfield is the XDS. Right now, it only comes in .45. Expect to see other XDS calibers in the future.

The XDs is single-stack and has the great XD firing system. It is 45acp, however, which will feel quite a bit different from 9mm. Plus, out of that short barrel, 45acp is really bright/flashy. I am not a fan of teeny double-stacks like the 3" XD9. Width is much more important than length for carrying.

Really small pistols are going to kick a lot regardless of caliber.

Small thin grip makes recoil feel worse because less surface area to spread the force generated.

Best thing is to finda range that rents guns and have her try a selection.

The Kahr family of pistols is great! The functions are very easy since there is no external safety. They are all single stack, thus very thin for carrying.

It sounds like the 9mm round will fit your needs the best. There are two Kahr pistols that you might want to consider:

PM9: The smallest Kahr 9mm. In fact, this is one of the smallest 9mm pistols available! The CM9 is a less expensive version of the PM9. I own the CM9 and am very happy with it!

P9: This one has a slightly longer barrel and grip, allowing it carry one extra round. The CW9 is a less expensive version of the P9.

I provided the links to those guns.

Kahr has a funky pull so if she is new to shooting I would think and hard about that. Glock makes several good options but again you have the funky trigger issue. Take her to a gun store and let her play with a few of them.
