Recently saw a custom XD w/ a 1911 bushing installed and was curious as to what the advantage might be to this.

    none.

they are tack drivers right out of the factory.

to do so you would have to do some radical machine work for prolly a decrease in accuracy.

I agree I have the tactical 45 and it shoots great out of the factory. The one and only thing I might do is upgrade the trigger w/ the one from PRP it was on there website I saw the picture of the XD w/ the bushing. I would never do it but it looked really nice I just couldn't figure out the practical use. So what kind of machining would be required?

You would have to mill the slide to make it fit and prolly the bushing too or maybe the barrel itself. Your going to need a notch in the slide to keep it from flying off the front.

The amount of machine work trial and prolly error to do it you could just buy a 1911 if you want a bushing.

Most people try to eliminate the bushing from their 1911s the reason being is its creating a difficult to solve problem for extreme accuracy. Your dealing with three parts that need to come together in exactly the same configuration every time instead of two.

np. its also why revolvers just simply dominate bullseye competition. there are no lockup issues with the barrel bushing and slide.

this doesnt mean all revolvers are more inherently accurate than semi auto. its just easier to make a revolver super accurate with less money involved.
