So if I were to pick up an XD, should I go with the 5" barrel, or get the 4" ported version.

This would be for range/HD/SHTF. . . not concealed carry.

Then get the XDM with the 5.25 barrel. I had one for a bit for IDPA events.

A 9mm ported barrel does not reduce the muzzle jump much. But it will make the gun a lot louder to you, the shooter. Most folks ignore this issue, and pay the price when they get older. Any hearing protection will be defeated by the noise loud and persistent enough.

Cleaning the ported muzzle is an extra chore. If the front sight is close enough, it will be fouled heavily.

The 5.25 XD has such pretty factory fiber optics, you don't need any porting with it.

You will really appreciate that longer barrel on a range gun.

I have the XDM 5.25 9mm version...great striker gun and magazine holds 19 rounds...no need for an extra mag for self defense situations for sure

You will also get a lot more muzzle flash with the ports.

Porting is IMHO detrimental on an SD gun.

Firing them in low light illuminates the shooter and ruins your night vision.

    I'd go with 5.25 XDM

    Good Luck

And on ported guns some ammo is not recommended .... FYI
