Found this used at a local shop for $499, just need to get the right forward assist and flash hider to get it right.

I know the barrel isn't quite right, it a Gov. Profile chromed lined in 5.56 not .223. I know the barrel is suppose to be slimmer.

I will be picking up 5 steel 20rd mags to go with it as well and a hard case.

On a side note. The rear sight has two setting just like the a2 or a3, but on this a1 they seem to be the same. What's up with that.

What a great gift for your FIL! You done good Nathan!

I would go with the aluminum 20rd mags. Colt would really dress the A1 up. What brand is this, one of the Century models? Looks great whatever it is.

Yep just found some 20rd original Colt mags for $18 a pop. The rifle looks to be from a parts kit with an Olympic lower.

The trigger that was in it was the worst trigger I have ever felt, worse than my SKS.

So I cleaned up, polished and used some dry lube to the factory trigger that came in my American Spirit Arms rifle and now its smooth as glass.

The BCG looks to have been a full auto that has been ground down and it had the full auto trigger group in it (not good).

I can't wait to get the tear drop forward assist and 3 prong A1 flash hider on it, IM also getting an original Colt bayonet to go with it.

I also need a video camera cause I can't wait to see his face when he opens this gift.

I don't know if u can see the mirror finish I put on the trigger and hammer

Here is why I say the BCG was ground down

I didn't want to put the ser.# the pic but its and odd one very very very low #, only 3 digits.

This was also the filthiest rifle I ever had the misfortune of cleaning. I ended up needing to use brake cleaner just to see the metal on the BCG, the lower I got frustrated with the lower and stripped it, took out side, put in a vice, and pressure washed LOL.It was really that bad.

Also that pin holds the firing pin place needed to be tapped out with a punch and hammer. it was also replaced. After these issues were corrected 90rds down range and yet another cleaning and its now flawless.

The bdc on the original colt scope really works. The real ones are made in japan. But unless your a collector there is no real reason to get one. One came with my colt sp1 when i bought it in the late 80s. They are nice but not 300+ nice just as a shooting scope

I think so too, but IM not sure if I over paid for the bayonet or not, $80 shipped, its suppose to be unused in perfect shape with no blemishes, but u know how that goes when buying online.

Hell I just got a quad rail for my light weight 16" AR and they look perfect and are nicely made, but the top and bottom rails are 1/4" closer at the delta ring so there useless for any optics. Go figure.

I just hope this bayonet isn't a flop like them rails were.

Some times trying to find the best deal is a bad thing to do.

A shame on the rails, Nathan, I hope you can return them. As far as the bayonet, an M7 or M9 will fit an A1 rifle like you have. Or a 16" midlength or 14.5" M4. They don't fit the 16" barrelled M4s though. As long as you have a bayonet lug on the FSB you're good to go.

I got my M7 for about $25 a couple years ago from Cheaper Than Dirt or CDNN, can't remember which. It was sold as used but I'm sure it never was issued, just needed a good cleaning. I see now they sell copies for about the same price but not true GI issue. The real ones in new condition go for much more so I think you probably got a decent price. Also the M9s go for a little more but I wanted a Vietnam era M7 as you do.

Looks like the real deal and a nice touch that it says Colt. Mine isn't Colt though it is GI issue. I've never heard of any problems with Apex so I think you did just fine!

the m16a1 stock from apex came to day and its perfect, not a scratch or blemish one, they said there would be.

the colt 20rd mags came to day and out of the 3 ar15's i have sitting here, they only drop free from my ASA, the other two the mags fit very tight. that kinda sucks

I have five Colt 20rd mags and all drop free from my three lowers, S&W, ArmaLite and Valkyrie. Look closely at the welds, on older mags they can come loose. I have a couple surplus GI mags that don't drop free and one has broken welds. The other is a Sanchez which I've heard isn't the best. (Well it has a Sanchez floorplate... so doesn't mean anything.)

Thanks for the feedback on the Apex A1 stock, Nathan. I'm considering getting one for my ArmaLite which now has the A2. Did yours come with the shorter A1 screw to mount to the tube? Does it actually say Colt?

yes on the screw, and i didnt see it say any thing on the stock, it has the smooth but plate but it looks like an a2 door on it, not sure if that how they were or not. where would i look for the colt markings

and here is what was stated on the web sight
Colt AR15/M16A1 Buttstock Assembly with Trapdoor Buttplate $35.00

    Original Colt M16A1 buttstock assembly.

They are complete with the trapdoor buttplate, screws and the rear sling swivel.
Taken from original unissued M16A1 export rifles.
They may show minor dings from handling and the buttplates typically have a minor non structural crack from ageing.
They are otherwise in new condition.

The earlier M16A1 buttstocks are 1 inch shorter than the current M16A2 buttstocks.

Thanks, Nathan. Nice pictures too. I really didn't expect it to say Colt, just curious.
