I just got this M2 .50 ammo can as a payment for my grandmother. It's been repainted, but is still pretty cool. Can anyone shed some light on this for me? They're a bit rusty but I think it's mainly surface rust, should steel wool take most of it off?

Would it harm the metal? I may just get the light rust off and leave it at that

You need to prepare all the surfaces if you intend to repaint the can. The wire brush will do a good job of that.

I'm not wanting to repaint it, just get all the "loose" rust off. Does anyone know what color they originally were?
