Just bought my first Thompson Contender (wanted one for years)
    Used - came with a Super 16 30-30 barrel & 4X Redfeild scope-
GREAT shooter & a hoot to shoot
    Incredible trigger-
Question is mt next barrel choice?
I do not hunt - But we have (getting worse) a coyote problem here- Since i quit hunting many years ago the only long gun i own is a 10-22. So i thought the Contender might fill the bill on the ocasional critter after my neighbors calves  Pasture next to my place-
First thought is a 223 but a couple freinds say 22 Hornet - Range will be out to 150 yrds max (all i feel i could hit & kill at) I'm a good shot but sure not great:eek:
    Barrel length would be 14"
Any EXPERIENCED advice in this situation?

Oh yeah - Heres a pic

I like the .223 idea, easy to find in many flavors and affordable. Nice looking TC, they are a fun pistol and a bit addictive when it comes to adding barrels. Let us know what you decide to buy.

    HOWDY :D

The 22-250 was brought up several times too-
I think i'll go with the 223 mostly because of ammo cost, I'll be plinking & practicing a whole lot more than coyote killin -
Found one from a TC dealer blue with adj iron sites for about $250 shipped.

This is my Remington XP-100 in .35 Remington. I put a Fajen Laminated Coffee Stock on it. It's got good range and accuracy. The .35 Remington is also good for larger game with bullet weights up to 200 grains. Recoil is pretty stout, but easily manageable, and ammo is avaliable most everywhere. I've seen several Contender Super 14's in this caliber. Bill T.

Whoever recommended a .22 Hornet was right on--especially for a TC. A 22-250 is a great round, but in a short contender barrel it puts out a tremendous amount of muzzel flash, and at the ranges you mentioned (150 yards) the Hornet would do everything you want it to and be pleasant to shoot. Another good choice is the .221 Fireball (or even a 17 Rem Fireball), which is a great round and will give you a little more oomph than the Hornet.

Either the .22 Hornet or the .223 will do the job. I'd recommend a .223 solely based on ammo costs. The .223 ammo will be quite a bit cheaper. If you reload then ammo costs don't figure in.

See if you can chamber it in Weatherby .300 mag, that should have enough oomph to kill coyotes. :)

My favorite barrel for that type of work is the 256 magnum.
You would have to find a used one though.
