    you hit it and it puts a ding on a corner of something. any ideas?
    the striker head travels in a groove.

    POSSIBLY a metal working tool to notch a metal rod or tube. When the V shape is placed on a rod, it centers it. Striking the tab with hammer will indent a line at a right angle to the tube or rod.
