this is a weird thing. on the far end is a lamp switch knob. the other end is spring loaded and you squeeze it into the body. but what for?????
    it makes no sense.

This may be some cock-a-mamie capacitor your father put together. With someone else present, push in the plunger several times and grasp the cylinder portion, then spin the switch. See what happens & good luck!

Does either end screw completely off..? If so , the left end looks like a foot print to push something , perhaps a bent body pat..? Only guessing of coarse.!

Not a pinball wizard, are you? Remove the screw on lamp switch handle (Which does not belong there), put a pull knob on there, pull back, let go, ball goes zooming up the machine.

I played a lot of pinball back in the day. Wouldn't the spring part be inside the round part? You'd pull the shooter/plunger back and let it go. This almost looks like you'd have to push it to send the ball into the machine.

I am certain it is an adjustable support for hanging suspended pipes. I just cannot find a picture. :(

That thing that looks like a lamp switch. I have seen it on a pipe hanger. I have tried to find a picture. I just cannot find one now.
That plunger screws in, doesn't it?
