My little boy (age 4) came into the bedroom while I was finishing up getting dressed the other morning. I had my belt and all the stuff that was going into my pockets or on the belt laid out on the bed. He pointed to my magazine carrier and said, "What's that?"

I told him it was extra ammunition for my pistol. He said, "What's a pistol?" (The pistol was till in the safe on my nightstand.) I thought he knew that word, but I knew for a fact that he understood "gun," so I told him that a pistol is a gun. And then I explained, "Some people carry a gun to help them defend themselves and their families."

He stepped over and hugged me around the leg and said, "Thank you, daddy!"

Amazing how smart kids are before all those years of education eliminates common sense!

Excellent. And that's probably all it takes to start him out on the right path.

Now if we could educate some adults to appreciate our efforts to protect them...
