I recently bought this gun from a friend and I am confused on the background of this shotgun. Does anyone know about the gun? Any help would be appreciated.

It looks like a model 1897 Winchester.

Markings look like a trench gun. :)

Disregard that. It's not a 1897 Winchester. I'm doing some research to help you out.

Looks like a model 1912 or model 12 as it's sometimes called. Looks to be modified somewhat...
My model 1912 is a two piece. If you turn the magazine tube a quarter turn it breaks down to two pieces.
    Just a guess...

I agree, it looks to be a model 1912 Winchester. It doesn't appear to be a Trench Gun due to the lack of a heatshield and bayonet lug.

Looks like the heat shield and bayonet lug was taken off the markings on the underside of the barrel or am I mistaken?

This is a pic of a trench gun I have found, Win 12.

Thing throwing up a flag is it has a hammer. Now, I am not a gun guru by any means so this could be just a thing, but are there other models of trench gun without the hammer?

Also, this is in line with what you posted as well.

That marking is supposed to be for a trench gun.

Have to agree. The three bolts holding the heat shield and Bayonet on look like the grooves on the bottom of the front of the barrel. It just looks like someone took the "goodies" off.

You should go to the Introduction section and rattle off a "bout me" thread.

the model 12 was pushed intp service during the war after the success of the '97....modified to accept the heat shield and bayo lug...looks like they were removed and cycled back to the civilian market.

A lot of those wound up in police departments where the heat shield and bayonet lug were removed.

Does anyone know where to find or how hard it will be to find an original heat shield and bayonet lug?

Check on Gunbroker in the parts area. may want to check your laws to see if shotguns are allowed to have a bayonet lug....they can't in NY
