winchester model 88 .308

    A good friend of mine is in Afghanistan and asked me to hold on to it for him. I know very little about the rifle other than they were originally black with a checkered pattern. Unfortunately the one I have is acorn with a basket like design.

    Any input on the rifle would be appreciated

    It's a classic. It was the answer to a problem - how to use pointed ammo in a lever action. The model 88 was the answer in the 1960s, the caliber & platform had a nice run.

    Engineers have gotten more creative w flex tip ammo but I just read a thread where the 35 ammo failed to open up. I expect better.

    The few I seen had had stock colors from kinda light to somewhat dark in stain. All checkering and a good blued finish. Lots of good info here.-
