I have a Winchester Ranger 30-30 caliber. About every 4th or 5th shell does not go off. I noticed that the ones that do not go off are not dented as far
as the ones that do go off. You can put the shell back in and it will go off the 2nd time. Is the firing pin getting bad or could it be something else?

My first guess is light hammer spring. I don't remember if the newer ones like yours have a hammer spring tension screw but if it does then you could just tighten that a little.

Good posibility that you have gunk, dried lube, and the remains of that peanut butter and tuna fish sandwich in the firing pin channel. Get a spray can of Gunscrubber, pair of safety glasses, use the little tube, flush out the firing pin channel, lube lightly. If that does not do it, check hammer spring, then firing pin.

Try a different brand of ammo. You might have some hard primers.

The lever has to be firm against the butt stock to fire.
If there is dirt, or the lever is not held correctly the firing pin pay not strike with the authority it needs.

Bad hammer spring or get a new brand of ammo and see if there's a difference.

Thanks to everyone for the advice, I will try different ammo 1st and if that does not work replace the hammer spring.

just to drop some other points. if it is an older model winny and it has been dry fired A LOT then check for birrs around the strike face where the pin hits the inside. and for dianostic perposes only you can pull the spring out longer to give it some more tension to see if the spring is week.

It's possible too that the firing pin is broken.
I had that happen to me once in the past.
