My wife said I could spend 1550 on a limited edition Colt Wiley Clapp I am so excited I can't wait to pick it up.
What do some of y'all think about the price?

They are sweet pistols. I'm not sure on the price, but Canebrake is the resident expert on these.

Ya I know my heart stop when when the guy at the store told me over the phone what he had. All I could think about was going and taking a look at it and then asking my wife.

Two months ago you could get one for 1250. I would hold out for a bit unless you HAVE to have it now.

That's a loaded question . I don't have any gun.
But colts are just hard to come by here so when you know of an LGS that has one you better jump on it cause if you wait it will be gone.

I think Cane has a Wiley Clapp Commander.

If you want it, see if they have any wiggle room on the price. If not and you really want it, buy it anyway.

Because:

A. There aren't a bunch of them around
B. It's a Colt
C. It's a limited edition Colt

I'm pretty sure that within a year they'll be selling for over MSRP.

CA375 I knew there was a reason I like you I like the way you think . I was thinking along the same line.
A co worker that was sitting next to me on the ride home, said that was allot of money for a gun but, he like mil surps. And I like new guns.

I just got curious, who was Wiley Clapp ? Wiki - Nada.

A 1911 forum was debating this. This is what I found :

Besides writing for a few gun mags, Clapp was a Marine rifle platoon leader in Vietnam. He went on to be a full-time cop (Orange County, I think) in Southern CA. A little more time in the ringer than that guy with the strange-sounding name who is considered a police-training and use of force expert. I wouldn't mind having one of the Colts he designed.
Bob

Wiley Clapp used to write for the NRA along with Shooting Times and Guns and Ammo. While at Shooting Times he had a column he wrote under the pen name Ken S. LaFrance, I believe. Which sounds like "Quien es La France?," or "who is La France."

He was also a champion of the .40 Smith and Wesson when it came out. That got him in a little trouble when he quoted an author as saying that maybe the .40 S&W would end "this damned 9mm silliness." Then folks found out the author was... Wiley Clapp. That kinda stuff can hurt your credibility.

His articles, from what I remember, were decent. Nothing really earth-shattering, and I don't recall him writing much about self defense or combat shooting, really. He was pretty knowledgeable, but personally, quoting himself to support his position kinda took away from his credibility.

Others were less kind referring to him as a marketing tool created to improve sales. Ruger, SW, Colt - all have Wiley Clapp editions.

IMHO - I prefer pre 80s Colts - triggers don't need anymore "help" by "Engineers" even with the best of "intentions."

Just my .02. Hopefully Cane can shed some light here. (if I can get his attention - Full Length Guide Rods - do they improve accuracy n cycling or just PIA marketing gimmick ?) Mea Culpa for the hijack OP. :p

They are out there, and worth the $!

That sucks.

See if you can find a Lightweight Colt Commander. Failing that, check out the Dan Wesson Commander Bobtail (CBOB) You'll be impressed.
