I recently aquired a Ruger Commander 1911 with 2 factory mags. One mag's feed lips aren't uniform with the other. I want to start collecting mags to shoot FMJs & various JHP brands. Any opinions?

Wilson Combat. There's another brand that's very popular here, the name eludes me.. I'm sure someone will chime in.

Ditto on the Wilsons. I think the other premium brand your thinking of is Tripp Research.
I've had no problems at all with Wilson, thus no need to search for a "better" brand. It's really hard to improve on 100%.

Thanks, y'all. I'll see if a buddy will let me use his WC mag. The reviews for Tripp look good too.

Wilson Combat. Tripp Research, Chip McCormack are some of the best.

Canebrake swears by the Tripps. pretty confident in saying that with his engineering background and his knowledge of the 1911 platform, i would feel very sure in in his recommendations on them.

personally i have used and currently use both Wilson Combat and the Chip McCormack mags and have yet to have any problems with either in any type of ammo used in my 1911's.

I'll +1 on the Chip McCormack mags, they've never given me any reason to doubt em, haven't tried the others. Interestingly, my local Handy Ace Hardware carries the McCormack's along with tons of other good stuff and ammo with good prices (they are franchised/individually owned so results will vary if you ever tried yours)...

I've got 18 Wilson Combat 47Ds and they all run 100%. No complaints.

Most all my mags are Wilson or Chip McCormick. I've not had one fail yet. I must admit CAne's endorcement fo rtripps has made me want ot get a few to check them out. they look fantastic. I have a ton of mags though and just have on thought about buying more. Not that I think you can have too many...heh

MecGar makes good magazines, and very affordable.

Other good brands are Metalform and Checkmate.

Well I couldn't get in touch with him to borrow his 47D so I bought my own. This was after a range session. I'm not sure what magazines come stock with it but I'm not in the least impressed. It ran like a Llama, it jammed a third of the time with FMJs. I had to smack the back of the slide to get it to go forward. I got my 47D in shortly after & it loads nicely but I ordered a Tripp Super 7 kit for it. I'll let y'all know how it functions.

I haven't bought any extra mags for my Full size SR1911, but I haven't had any problems with the original mags!! I have had mine for about a year now and not one hiccup!!

Perhaps this mag was made during the scare when manufacturer quantity was more important than quality.

a lot of gun makers outsource the mags from different vendors. and some really cheap out with the mags. as much as i like my Remington R1 Enhanced, i was less than impressed with the OEM mags that came with it. i bought a few Wilson Combat mags for it. my AC Commander, didn't really care for the OEM mag that came with it either, but my SA Micro Compact 45 has some awesome SS mags that came with it.

Y'all know the excited child that can't keep a secret after discovering something awesome? That kid is me. I got the kit in today & installed it. For grins I racked some rounds through it to see if there's any potential catching, there's none. Then I cycled .45 acp shotshells without any problems :D
I'll have a range report after tomorrow.

I read somewhere that the Wilsons have better tubes with weaker springs & vice versa for the Tripps (I can vouch for the spring difference). Can't find it but I'll paste it if I do.

Range report: Two more FTFs. I think I've ruled out the mag. I looked at the unfired rounds, they're bulged reloads.

I have had great luck with Chip McCormick mags in 1911s. Wilson Combat is also good.
