You want to shoot reloads? Or off the shelf ammo? What ranges? How big of a critter are we talking about here? Groundhogs? Coyotes?

Give CCI stingers a try, they worked for us in years past. Before we found them my dad used his 308 a few times.

Your on the right track, 22-250, .223, .204 Ruger, 6.8 SPC, 17 HMR. It pretty comes down to budget and what trips your trigger.

For ammo availability...223 all the way. You have MUCH more variety from 40 gr to 80 gr. 300 yards the .223 is all you will need.

.22-250 will have more oomph at 300 but at the cost of much more recoil and limited ammunition choices/availability. If you were saying 4-500, I would say .22-250 or 6mm Rem.

I would have to agree with Robo. In that range, and with that criteria, I think that 5.56/.223 is going to be a better all around fit for your needs as described.

Don't over look the .204 Ruger. Getting more and more popular and an extremely flat shooting round. Not sure how the price vs .223 compares.

Another vote for the .223. It's good on groundhogs & coyotes out to about 400 yards before it starts to lose steam. If you was shooting 400-600 yards the 22-250 would be better.

To continue this conversation....which, in y'alls opinions, is the better round...the .22-250 or the 6mm Rem? Cuz I may be looking at one or the other.

You reload don't you Lon? Are you wanting to stay with factory rounds or go with a wildcat? It's getting harder to find 6mm ammo. What size critters are you going to shoot? Include deer? If you're going to include deer the 6mm is better.

Don't reload yet, Bear, but I will. Coyotes and wild dogs primarily, I have a
.308 for whitetail and pigs, .223 for up to 300 or so yards, but I want something that will deliver on the smaller animals at 500-600 yards.

The 22-250 or the .220 swift is going to shoot flatter, as does the .204 ruger but I'd stay with at least a .22 centerfire for wind bucking abilities (however small). A great wildcat is the 6mm/284 if you want the ultimate varmint rifle. The 6mm/06 is good too.

6mm Remington hands down. The 75gr bullet can be driven over 3500 fps, more than adequate to reach out there for varmints. New bullets and powders only make the 6mm better. I've watched my brother with his 788 for the past 35 years take everything from groundhog to mule deer with it.
