I've been noticing alot of bucks who have almost fully-formed racks, still have velvet on 'em,, but they were pretty big. Even saw what looked like an 8 point on the way to work the other day

I thought it was too early though?

I suppose you could say they start to grow their new antlers as soon as the old ones shed.

I have seen bucks with noticeable antlers during spring turkey season.

I initially read this thread title as "When do bucks start to grow their antlers on their backs?"

I was about to say when you live too close to that nuclear plant.

Now that I re-read the title I think others have it covered.

Deer start to grow as soon as they drop. A mature bull elks antlers is one of the fastest growing tissues in the world. During prime time they can grow up to an inch a day.
