Last I checked, it was 21 for handgun ammo and 18 for rifle.

I'm 20 and just bought my first gun (a 10/22) and I think it's pretty ridiculous that I can't legally buy ammo online for the gun that I just bought.

IIRC, and ammo that can be used in either a rifle or a pistol, has an age limit of 21. online, i don't know how they could verify your age.

i have bought ammo from MidwayUSA and MidSouth Shooters Supply and i can't recall that anything about my age came up, other than it required an adult signature upon reciept when shipped.

22 lr causes heartburn for some retailers because it can be used in either a hand or a long gun. Some vendors play it safe and enforce the more stringent interpretation of the rule. Shop around and buy from those that give you the best service at a price you can except.

In the case of a multi- purpose round, like .22 LR, it can be sold at 18 IF the seller has cause to believe that it will be used in a rifle.

However, your issue here is NOT with the seller, it is with the transporter. Just hopped on live chat with UPS, and asked them the definition of ADULT as in Adult Signature Required (how ALL ammo and guns are shipped) Here is the answer- copied and pasted.

The person who signs for an Adult Signature Required package must show government issued photo ID that proves age of at least 21 years old.

I respect your posts. I don't know about WVA but in Va we don't require any signature at all. My delivery of some .308 ammo was sitting on the front porch. And all the ammo must be delivered by UPS and UPS only. No other carrier can provide this service.

I drove/delivered for Fedex Ground for 5 years. They started Signature Required about the 2nd year I was there. We never asked for ID but did implement the signature required service. Users paid extra for this service.

By the way, HotFudge. By the time there is any .22 LR ammo available, you may be 25 - so age should not be an issue :)

When you order ammo with a credit card Midway can see how old you are. Many ammo vendors want a copy of your drivers license on file before they will accept your order.

Hell, I can remember when stores kept a notebook that you had to sign to buy rifle/pistol ammo or a 25 lb bag of sugar.

You must be pretty old :D I don't remember that.

25# sugar? What are you making? You could make lots of this - sugar, little coffee, vanilla bean and Christian Brothers Brandy. I'll come over and we can discuss it. We are just up the street.

I'm in Kalifornia and they just leave it on my doorstep. Although I have never bought handgun ammo I have bought rimfire ammo and it was delivered by UPS with no signature.

Oh, well, we had a few rural counties where the farm supply stores sold 25 lb bags of sugar. By the pallet load. And gallon plastic jugs. By the pallet load. And folks that did a lot of welding of stainless steel tanks and piping.

Do a Google search for "operation lightning strike franklin county".

Quote from the article: County authorities say the practice has probably not stopped but busts are few and far between these days.

The price of sugar made the business very low profit, even before the recent rounds of inflation, I would estimate around the mid 90's. Now you can buy brandy in the liquor store that is as good or maybe even better than anything made in the hills.

(Although to tell the truth- the days of hand made artisan whiskey, doubled, backed and twisted have been long gone)

And how the heck did we wander this far off topic?

Being 21 to purchase ammo would be considered great next year, cause in NYS come Jan 2014 it will be illegal to purchase ammo over the internet even if you're over 100. All ammo will be treated like it is currently in NYC. Purchases will have to be made through an FFL with the addition of a background check. Welcome to 1930's Germany.

I remember those days well. Our local Western Auto had one of those old composition notebooks you had to sign, date, and put in the caliber and quantity. I also remember a brief period when you had to show a DL to buy ammo no matter how old you looked.

I'm 47. Went to Dick's to get my two young boys BB's. The cashier asked for my birthdate. Must need to be 18 or 21. Whacko laws, I know, but don't take it personally.
