Saw this thing, cannot identify. It is approximately 4" long, and ugly as hell.

    I considered shooting it.

And don't tell me it's harmless.

Looks like one but no horn on the anterior. If it were still living, it would have likely become a butterfly!

Harmless, except to the vegitation it consumes.

That was my thought, but perhaps consulting our resident exterminator (Shihan) would be in order here. I do hear that they are tasty, or at the very least full of protein. If you have a vacuum packer, save it for November. Otherwise, by mid September, it will be a pretty flutterby.

Hickory Horned Devil (Citheronia regalis) or the Regal Moth.

Here is the Grown up. Wow, tonight has been fun for me.

Benning, I marvel at your awesomeness. How did you teach it to roll over? Or did you manage to snap a picture while it was napping?

    One word: fishbait.

I had my Spartan on me, I should have laid it next to it for scale, but I was too horrified.

I kid you not, 4" long. If it turns into a moth, it better come with 2 tiny Japanese ladies to sing to it, or look out Tokyo.

Benning, before you go back into the woods next please make sure you are armed. You never know when you might come across one of these,

That is a Hickory Horn Devil caterpillar. They feast on hickory leaves until fall comes. They then go under ground for a year and when they emerge they are a gorgeous moth.

ps yes, it is harmless. I have held them many times. It's the fury ones that you might want to not touch.
