I want to upgrade my barrel from a stock 1:9 twist 16" to a 1:7 twist 16". I have found some for $150. Is there something I should be unbending on beforehand?

If I change the barrel can I change from .223 to 5.56?

I have become a fan of the lightweight profile barrels w/ the gas port at the midlength position. Yes you can go w/ 5.56. Go w/ a new bolt and check head spacing to be safe.

Unless you're sure of your skill ... instead of replacing the barrel I'd buy a new upper with quality parts and the barrel profile and rail you really want then sell your existing upper. In the long run I suspect you'll end up with a better gun and save heartache and money, especially in labor costs.

What kind of ammo are you shooting?

First off, why do you want the different barrel?

What do you use your AR for?

Do you have to or plan to carry it a lot?

What type of ammo do you want to feed it?

What type of area do you live in with regard to humidity? And where do you plan to take it to use it?

These questions can help in making a recommendation in profile, length, rifling twist, barrel material, and whether or not to recommend a chrome lined barrel or not.

Not sure where you are looking at a barrel for $150 but there are some companies that you may want to avoid.

So I spoke with my Gun Smith and settled on a Rainer Arms 16" bead blasted Match series. HOLY CRAP I am just hammering nails.Sweet.
