I'm rather partial to the .243 Win. Mine does wonders with 70gr. bullets, either Ballistic Tips or TNT hollow points. However, even I must admit that pretty much anything between the .204 Ruger and the .25's will do just fine. The .223 and the .22-250 are probably the best choices for availability of both rifles and ammo.

    22-250, .222, .223, and even a .243 are all good coyote guns within 400M.

What distances do you plan to shoot the dogs from? That will dictate what rifle would be best...

Well I own 3 Remington 700 long guns and they are all fabulous. I used to own a Savage in .308 and I never had any complaints!

at the distances you stated, any of the calibers suggested. plus i will throw in my favorite coyote caliber of years past, the 25-06 with 100gr bullets. flat shooting, accurate, very little felt recoil and easy to reload for. another that you might consider that i like and IMO should be a good coyote round, the 7mm-08, again very accurate, low recoil and easy to reload. maybe someone else has used this round before on coyote's could lend their input as to it's effectiveness on them.

I have a older Remington model 700 chambered in 243 winchester and it is one of my favorite rifles. It shoots very accurately, much more accurate than myself.

Are you planning to save the hides? If so .204, .223, or 22-250 will work great. .243, 25-06 are other great for coyotes but put big holes in them. I prefer a tikka or a savage. Both smooth guns And shoot very tight groups. .223 is the cheapest ammo. Have fun

as much as i like my 308, my 7mm-08 gets more trigger time! fantastic round and really easy to reload. i'm thinking of doing one in a fluted heavy barrel in the future to build into a short to medium range target rifle.

i sighted in a friends 6.5x55 this week to get it ready for opening of deer season theis weekend, what a nice round. it was in an older winchester M70 and was it fun to shoot.

I've killed a few dogs with my 17 HMR...... It's extremely fun to shoot; just can't reach as far or shooting high wind..........
