Ok, after hurricane Katrina, many years ago, our relatives lived with us, cause their house was gutted, while ours was intact. I remember while they were throwing ruined stuff away, I found a box of ammo. It was these weird pistol cartridges with the slug sunk in and flush with the casing. Turns out it was .38 ammo (that's what my dad told me, I was too young to know all the specifics).
I have never found cartridges like that, again. I even searched online and the closest thing is the .38 AMU, but that's a semi-auto cartridge (they may have been AMUs, but like I said, I was too young to remember all the details).
I just got some .357 and .38 ammo, and I found one of these within the assorted ammo. It's just how I described, slug flush with the casing, and the head stamp says "Precision .38SPL.", but it seems Precision ammo never made anything like this

Bullet is a .38 special wad cutter, used mostly for target shooting. Could be a reload.

Wad cutters make a neat, round hole in targets, making them easier to score the targets.

Yep. That is a very popular .38 Special target load, known as the wadcutter. Typically 144 or 148 gr soft lead, light powder charge. Bullet shape clips a neat clean edged hole in paper targets.

    Ah, a wadcutter!

How did I not know that? X)
    Anyway, thanks y'all.
It seems that no where online could give me a straight answer of "It's a freakin wadcutter!"
Kinda wish it was a .38 AMU.
Would've gone nice in my collection.

    I might just try that.
I have some paper body targets I should try it on, they'd show up great on the black background.
I'll have to go buy more... Oh wait I can't.
    Nobody has ammo!
