What is the difference between gun grease and lubricating oil? What are they for and when would one use one over the other?

Different parts require different lubes. Gun oil is a liquid at room temp. Gun grease- think of Crisco or vaseline.

at the end of the day I bought a base Hoppe's cleaning kit, it has solvent, a spray oil, and a gun grease. I just want to know what to clean my 1911 with and with what grease, oil, solvent to use what on what on.

I cleaned the whole field strip with solvent, put a thin layer and wiped it off of oil, but left enough to know that oil had been there, and put grease on things that go click.
