Most people call any removable magazine a "clip". That's incorrect, a clip is a whole different animal from a magazine.

Stripper clips are military devices used to speed up rifle charging. Generally, it was a strip of thin sheet steel folded inward along its sides so as to retain cartridges by the extractor groove and long enough to retain the required number of rounds. It required a machined "guide" slot forward of the action bridge to hold the clip's lower end as the rounds were pressed down and into the rifle with the left thumb, "stripping" the stacked ammo directly from the clip into the magazine.

Mauser's (better) military rifles have a semi-circular cut in the left side wall of the action, just forward of the bridge, to make it easier to push all the way down with the shooter's thumb. The 1903 Springfied was also stripper clip fed but did not have that thumb cutout.

The M1 Carbine used a 15 round stripper clip that fitted over the top of the removable magazines so ammo could be pushed into them in seconds.

The M1 Garand used what was called an "enblock" clip, it held 8 rounds and basically constituted a magazine as the rounds were held and fired. It was automatically ejected (and rarely reused by the military ) when the ammunition was expended.

And that's most of the story on clips! ( It's an old guy thing! :D )

Nicky why don't you go over to the Introductions and post a thread letting us know a little about yourself.

Your first post, albeit beneficial, should not be a link.

It makes us mods a little uneasy.

You guys have it all wrong. Stripper clips are those things that hold a G String together. ;)

Geez, do I have to do everything around here?
