I'm assuming you're joking about the Cold Steel part, right?

And I'm also not sure what you mean by "original". There are still swordmakers out there who make "samurai" swords by the traditional methods, but a quality piece by an established swordmaker will run two or three thousand dollars, minimum.

While I do enjoy coldsteel products, a handmade 'origanal' katana far out shines them. Both in function and beauty. If I had the means to get an origanal katana Id be all over it like fatkid to birthday cake!

Take a master gunsmith's hand made Pennsylvania rifle where all of the forging if iron, shaping and fitting of parts is done by hand, as well as all of the carving, decoration, engraving, and years of experience to understand every facet of the piece being made, and the fact that it could take from weeks to months, to years to actually complete the finished product, depending on what grade was being made, and then you can understand that there is a difference.

Take that same hand crafted Pennsylvania rifle and put it next to a CVA that is mass produced. There is a difference in what you are paying for.

I wouldn't go as far to say an original far outshines in function. They had state-of-the-art craft back then, but all their work to make "pure steel" is easily done in the modern day!

Chemists have analyzed every variation of alloy far, far beyond what they knew back then.

So, if you want to compare Cold Steel's 1055 heat-treated steel to a random old handcrafted samurai sword that would vary much more in carbon and heat treating....

Can a perfect condition old-school katana do this?... Probably, but I'd like to see an old-school katana do that bend at the very end...

Functionally they may be similar. But for an "original" you are buying craftsmanship, tradition and rarity. I wouldn't guy just randomly cutting brush and farting around with a hand made sword thatay be one of a kind or one of very few.

If you want something to practice with, cut up mats with, or press your friends by hanging from it, then get a Cold Steel. Will it ever be worth much? Probably not. Would it work on zombies? Probably.

Unless I was a student of Japanese sword technique -- if I just wanted a badass chopper -- I'd rather have one of these:

Watching first video, getting flashbacks of John Belushi in Samurai Delicatessen. Except for cutting the soda bottle vertically- Galagher would LOVE that!

    Cripes...

....I drooled on my shirt looking at these, they appeal to me on a primal kind of level, kind of want one (or two) for my "In case of Zombies break glass" Emergency box. Way cool.
