.40 cal. I live out of town
I use Hornady Critical Defense. Probably a dozen others I'd be just as comfortable using.
I would use gold dots, winchester ranger's, or just about any modern hollowpoint defensive ammo.
Just about any major US manufacturer's self defense ammo should serve you well. One thing to watch for with hollow-point ammo, is to look for ammo that says it is designed to expand after going through barriers. Many of the older hollow points tended to clog when going through leather, denim, etc, and fail to expand in flesh and bone.
I like Hornady's new Critical Defense, which I carry in my new XD sub compact .40. It is expensive, but for self defense you don't want cheap ammo.

I assume any major US mfg in 9 mm will work as well? Anyone have any favorites?
I use remington golden sabre +p as my carry ammo in all my pistols. I'm not sure if you guys are aware, but I was at my local gun store this week and he showed me 2 rounds from the same box of Hornady critical defense in 9mm that were misfires. He gave me the lot number(3090679) to check against my stock of them, (I have 8 boxes) and luckily mine were okay. He said Hornady is aware of the affected lot #s and have corrected the problem. I think they had about 5 or so boxes they were sending back. Just thought you guys should know. Check your boxes.
I prefer 155g Speer Gold Dots in my Glock 27.
I second that

There are many great options, so it's just about you playing around and figuring out which you like best.
For 40sw in particular, choosing a weight is probably a bigger issue than what brand you prefer. Some feel bigger is always better, and they'll always choose the 180gr rounds. Others like the faster 155-165gr weights. And there's also plenty of evidence that the 135-140gr loads are among the best defensive rounds, having ballistics similar to a 357sig.
All of these weights are fine defensive options. Pretty much every major manufacturer makes a quality defense round. It's really just about doing a little of your own hands-on research to figure out what fits you and your gun best.
This is where I order my defense ammo.
Same thing. Experiment a little, pick what you like.
FMJ: RUAG/RWS 124gr
JHP: Winchester Ranger 127gr +P+
I'll second that. The gap between the major American JHP's is minimal. The best bet is to get the ammo that your handgun likes the best. A FTF would be much more detrimental to you then a loss of 1/4" penetration.
Sd carry ammo
To me this new critical defence is just a sales selling point In all of my carry gun's I ues either of the following brand's of ammo for SD Fed HST'S, Win Ranger, Speer GD's, Rem Gold sabor's all these ammo's have been proven in LE use over time & their result's were my deciding factor, sure there are other great brands out there for more $$$$$ like Cor - Bon, another good ammo is the Hornady XTP ammo all of the above when you see them on sale grab them, when you can?
I would give a few a try and see what your pistol likes. Personally I use Federal HSTs in my 45 and Gold Dots in my revolvers.
I use Remington Golden Sabers exclusively in all my defensive weapons, mainly for one reason--they function perfectly 100% of the time. The Golden Saber bullet is shaped very close to a hardball and feeds the same in everything I have, and I put reliability as the #1 goal in a defensive pistol.
I also use Hornady Critical Defense, both 9mm and .40. I'm sure there are others out there just as good, but I was told by an expert that it was his choice and that he thought it was the best. I'm sure other experts have their 'best', but it's my choice.
