A west Toledo man is recovering after being shot during an attempted burglary overnight, but he will be charged for his involvement.

Police say Antione Garret, 34, and his girlfriend awoke to the sound of someone breaking into their home on Leybourn Avenue. When Garret heard the front window shatter, he ran downstairs and saw Randy Estrada, 21, climbing inside. Garret fired his handgun several times, until Estrada climbed back out the window and ran away.

A short time later, Estrada called 911 to report that he had been shot and was taken to a Toledo hospital for treatment. He is expected to survive his injuries.

"If someone's breaking into your house and you fear for your safety, you have the right to defend yourself and your family. And in this case, that's what we believe Mr. Garret has done," said Sgt. Joe Heffernan with the Toledo Police Department.

Police say Estrada will likely be charged once he is released from the hospital.

Can you imagine the 911 call?

"Hello. I've been shot. I don't know what happened. I was at this old house and fell against the window and it broke. I climbed in to try to find a broom to clean up the mess and some guy started shooting at me...".

It will probably be more like, "I was drunk and thought it was my house. Not being able to open the door I broke the window. I was just about to walk over and pass out on the sofa when some crazy just started shooting at me. I wasn't a threat. I wasn't armed. Son of a bitch just opened fire, nearly killing me."

Too bad more stories like this don't make it onto the "news", emphasis on the quotation marks. Showing stories like this to my wife make her really happy I've got the .357 mag next to the bed. There was a good write-up on usacarry.com about why both spouses should be armed. Now she wants her own gun for her side of the bed.

It's only a few blocks away from where I live. Nice to know that there are some good guys in my neighborhood to offset the criminals. Funny how the times change. This is where I grew up. When I was a youngin this was a great place to live. I'm sure the girlfriend might see eye to eye when I show her this thread and maybe she'll understand the s&w I keep on the night stand.

This section and these posts are my favorite part of this forum...a reinforcement of one of the many reasons we have the second amendment, why we must defend it and it reminds me to be prepared, vigilant and hopeful that I never have to use the shooting skills that I have acquired and honed.
