But what ideas can we come up with to reduce firearm violence?

I would like to see more enforcement of current firearms laws and, should a firearm be used in a criminal activity, mandatory jail time with no plea bargain for such time.

How about disposing of criminals period like they used to do back in the old days. I don't mean hanging petty thieves. I mean murderers amd rapists getting shot or hung. Things like that w almost no jail time so therefore less expense for tax payers.

1 - repeal the laws that DO NOT reduce gun violence
2 - enforce the laws already on the books
3 - I have no problems with background checks
4 - straw purchasers ... 20yrs in jail
5 - gun thieves ... 20yrs jail
6 - violent crimes committed with guns ... 20yrs in jail
7 - if a gun owner willingly/unwillingly does not store their weapons in a safe manner ... removal of firearms
8 - disarm beat cops ... if they are under no obligation to put themselves in harms way than they can make a call and wait for armed backup

that should be an infinitely better start than what Biden's group came up with

Don't forget murderers. I think anyone that takes someone else's life, no matter what the weapon, should never see the light of day again. Either execute them, or lock them up and throw away the key.
you mean like the guy in Brewster NY who killed his grandmother with hammer  ..... funny, I don't recall a hysterical outcry to ban hammers

Hi!

I agree with 7/8ths of your points.

Number 7, however, causes me some concern. Don't get me wrong - having three young children in my home, I am all about safe storage. It is a must and in my mind there's no question about it.

However, how would this legislation be enforced? Should we gunowners allow random inspections of our homes?

If we throw out the 4th Amendment, why not the 2nd? (And yes, I know the 4th Amendment has been gutted, but I hope you get the gist of my point).

Overall, I say that safe storage is up to us to enforce, and is something we should pass down to our children, right along with our beloved firearms.

How about a positive firearms campaign, with PROPER training, and making firearm carry more accessible.....

Wanna dry up gun crime overnight?.... Repeal the drug laws. Make dope worthless.

Wanna stop crazed gunmen?... More CCW end gun free zones, or opt to have cops/armed security if you don't want CCW at your school.

Boom...
Gang bangers have nothing to fight over.
Mexican cartels are out of the picture.
End to gun "free" zones will dry up that wet dream.

Now you're left with sporadic violence, and heat of passion murders... and a lack of guns aint gonna stop a guy from killing his wife, things like that.

To add. I find it funny, that during prohibition, there was so much associated violence that they made booze legal again...
But in the drug war, there's so much violence...that they.... scrap the constitution???.....

Excellent ... let's debate! :D

No, I am not advocating random inspections or some kind of Gov't oversight ... no, no, no, no, no  But what sickens me is when I hear of a child drowning and the parent wailing "i only turned my back for a second" ... BULL****! It's called negligence ... and we have punishments for that. So what I am saying is that if it turns out a crime is committed and the firearm owner was negligent in the storage of that firearm ... prosecute!

How's that sound?

No debate necessary. It appears we agree on at least two Amendments in the Bill of Rights.

I think it depends on what happens when you consider "negligence"... If a 2 year old accidentally pulls a trigger on a loaded gun thats laying on the ground, then okay, I see "negligence"...don't leave a loaded gun on the floor if you have kids...
But what if someone breaks onto my home, steals my guns, and uses them to shoot up a place?...Should I be at fault because i had a gun in a dresser drawer, or my rifle under the bed? I don't think so, and I call BS.

What about rifle racks in trucks? someone steals one and it's my fault? Don't think so.

By that definition of negligence, I should be at fault if my neighbor comes in, steals my lighter and burns down a house...or steals my car and crashes into a school bus...

or steals my kitchen knives and stabs someone...or steals my box of rat poison and poisons someone.... just be careful before you start saying people need to lock up their stuff.

No, someone breaking into your home is committing a crime ... it is not your negligence :)

Could be ... you want to take your ******* azzed truck down to the Bronx, NY and park it overnight with the gun unlocked in the rack exposed ... that's negligent. As a firearms owner you ought to know better

Negligence (Lat. negligentia, from neglegere, to neglect, literally "not to pick up something") is a failure to exercise the care that a reasonably prudent person would exercise in like circumstances.[1] The area of tort law known as negligence involves harm caused by carelessness, not intentional harm.

to add to the discussion,

9. Repeal the Gun Free School Zone laws
10. Develop a School Safety Shield program as presented by the NRA (I'm still not on board with arming teachers. I would rather returning/retired vets but that is a debate in another thread)
11. Upload information on mentally adjudicated persons the NICS system
12. any Physician who prescribes psychotropic drugs to a patient is required to follow up and closely monitor the patient for evaluation (meaning 1-2x a week, not once a month or two. if Dr's are going to be pushing these medicines on people they need to be responsible for their patient!)
