"Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely."
"Great men are almost always bad men."

"Unlimited power is apt to corrupt the minds of those who possess it"

"It is not only the slave or serf who is ameliorated in becoming free... the master himself did not gain less in every point of view,... for absolute power corrupts the best natures."

    Divide and Conquer.
We have been divided and conquered by the people we elected that became corrupted by power. Of course some were corrupt before they were elected.

This is true some of the time, perhaps most of the time, but personally what I think happens more often is: 'Corrupted people are drawn to power.'

Funny how Washington had no compunctions about relinquishing power freely and peacefully per the rule of law. It dumbfounded King George (and others). To me, it's just an indication of a good and principled man. There are lots of good people. Too few of them end up in politics. Indeed, the opposite is true: politics attracts those who actively seek power and wealth.
