I seem to remember, boy a long time ago, like in the '70s, seeing a sight for a shotgun at wal-mart that was basically a tube with what looked like a clear, plastic bulb, for lack of a better description on the forward end. Anyone else remember this? Was this some kind of early red dot?

Yes it was. I had one and it worked a lot better than it looked. It was seriously ugly but it did not require batteries. It did not work in the dark as it needed an outside light source.

You wouldn't happen to remember who made them would you?

Weaver Qwik-Point. I still have mine. Worked extremely well in use, but it was bulky, heavy, naturally illuminated, fogged up if it was damp out, and the mount gave me endless issues. I have been tempted by the new Burris SpeedBead, but i have also heard of mount issues with those, so I am holding off so far.
