We have an old Ward's Western 16 gauge Pump Action. Whenever it is fired, it's action opens and stays open. Loading more than one shell at a time doesn't work. Is there any easy reason for this and/or fix to it?

It will depend on just which brand of shotgun it is.Several mfg's made guns for dept. stores like Wards,Sears,Western Auto, etc.

Post a picture or two of the gun,and maybe we can see what brand, model you have.
It probably is a Stevens shotgun, they made a lot with the Western Field name on them.

The latch/lock that holds the bolt closed may be worn/ broken/ crudded up. If you can post model numbers, it MAY be in one of my cross references. For a start, be sure you are using the right length 16 g shell. If it is not marked as 2 3/4 inch shells, it MAY be for a 2 9/16ths shell (longer shell will still chamber, but give MUCH higher unsafe pressures) Next, strip it down and clean it. Gunscrubber spray can be helpful- do it outdoors, gloves and safety glasses,

Pictures are essentially unavailable, I only have a webcam on my laptop. It is marked for, and used with, 16 Gauge 2 3/4 inch shells. It is a ward's Western Field Model 60-SB620-A.

I recently stripped and cleaned it for the hell of it when I was cleaning the other guns, so if I go to a range I may take it and be able to update you guys on it. My Dad is opposed to shooting it if there may be a mechanical malfunction.

Some of the screws are old and stripped. I think we may need to get a gun smith. If that is the problem, is it dangerous to shoot? And if that isn't the problem, how many things could be wrong that would make it dangerous to shoot?
