My long supply of solvent is coming to an end. I have never tried ballistol. A few questions:

    1. Is it a good enough lubricant by itself?
    2. Is it safe for plastic? (Was not a concern 100 years ago)
    3. Does the smell linger in the room or on your clothing for a long time?
    4. Why do you think it is not very popular for smokeless powder guns?

I will appreciate the time you take to respond.

Hickok45 sure swears by it and mentions it in videos. As you implied it's very well thought of for black powder cleanup but that could be mainly because it's been around forever.

Sorry, I've never used it so no firsthand experience but am interested in what others say.

I have been using it for a year now and it works fine on my guns, it appears to be safe on most anything wood and polymer included. The only thing I heard (no first hand experience) was it will remove gold leaf and you also should not use it on nickel plated firearms. Its also sold as an all around cleaner and preservative. The only negative it does not smell as good as Hoppe's 9

    Ballistol fan here also...

My local Ma & Pa (Jim's Gun Shop in Raleigh) turned me on to it... I like it too as a lube and mild cleaner... just do not like the smell... sooooo in the garage is where I spray.

Perfect for the modern AR15 which needs lubrication more than rust protection :)

I just got some and so have only a little experience with it, but I'll tell you this: My M14 became pretty slick pretty quick. Same with a Win 70 bolt action that had been feeling a bit sticky using ordinary gun oil on the rails/bolt. I have a couple of those needle nosed micro-oiler bottles that I put it in so I can get a dab wherever I want it. I am highly optimistic that I will be ordering more and using it often. I love the sound of a slick semi-auto slamming home.

As for the smell, I didn't put any behind my ears. :)

I am not big on any smell. Anyway, smelled ballistol at a LGS. I think I'll stick with MPro. Thank all bros who advised.
