I've shot the Walther P22 pistol with the 4" barrel, and boy what a shooter! I had nothing but good experience with it. It is easy to load the magazine and holds a very tight group. I like it's light weight, and my wife, who has carpal tunnel in her wrists loves it. Wants me to buy her one. Although the .22 is kind of small for terms of self defense, I would not be afraid to let her have this as a SD pistol since she can hold such tight groups with it. Shot placement is very important, and this baby can put them in a tight enough group to discourage any would be attacker. You don't want to be shot with a .22 It is still a dangerous little round in capable hands.

Thanks guys I appreciate the input I haven't seen one in the flesh but the option of the spare barrel assemby was appealing, as you may be aware moderators are not restricted here. Believe it or not the 'Health and Safety' issue of noise polution is gaining ground and even full bore hunting rifles are being fitted with them, although we have used them on out .22lr rifles for years...............;)

I love my P22. It gets a brick of WallyWorlds cheapest run through it every week. No issues.

At first it was "so-so" with cheap ammo, which was irritating as I have several friends with P22's and theirs ran perfectly. Mine has now joined the reliability club. For the first month, I left the slide locked back to help the spring take a set.

How does it compare to a Ruger Mk2?
The Ruger has been my favourite affordable .22 for a long time, but people keep raving to me about P22s...
They are pretty different. I'm not a fan of the ergonomics of the Ruger Mk1/Mk2 pistol. The 22/45 frame is more comfortable.

I bought a Marvel conversion kit for an old Randal Commander frame I had laying around. It shoots great, and is 100% reliable. Also uses Colt Ace mags, which I had tons of. I prefer this pistol to the Rugers (in general).

If you like the Ruger, check out a Browning Buckmark.

fired a Buckmark several times, and I love them.
does feel similar to a Ruger, but nearly twice the price...
I love them both.
Currently the only .22 pistol I own is a Colt Woodsman match Target series 3, 1959 model but it has a broken sear with part missing and I don't know anybody I can copy one off and nobody has them in stock ( including Numrich, although they list them) so I am using my father's High Standard Supermatic Citation.
Nice gun, but doesn't feel as good to me as the Colt or a Ruger ( which feels better to me than the Colt).
Two people I know have recently bought P22s and won't shut up about them so I am kinda curious...

I bought my P22 on Monday, and I went to the range today with a brick of Federal HP. The first couple of magazines were off center, I adjusted the sights, and my grouping was dead center. After about 300 rounds, my groupings just got better and better. I'm going to have to give credit to the gun breaking in a little.

550 rounds can get boring sometimes, so I started shooting the hardest targets I could find (I shoot at an outdoor range, btw, its the oldest range in the state of MA at 125 years). After I was done cutting down saplings and plinking 44 mag brass at 25 yards:rolleyes:, I noticed that someone had left their Styrofoam packing for .40 S&W rounds on the ground at 25 yards. I ended up shooting it up over the backstop. This gun is soooo accurate its unbelievable. I bet its even more accurate with the 5" barrel, which I plan on purchasing sometime.

I had about 5 malfunctions out the 550. Ill give that credit to the ammo:mad:. Those 5ish times, there wasn't enough blow back to eject the brass and strangely enough it re-chambered it instead of stovepiping.

Cleaning was very easy, considering how much crap is left behind by 22lr's. After I thought I was done cleaning it tho, I noticed a "gritty" sound when I squeezed the trigger. Easily fixed by flushing the trigger assembly with solvent and thoroughly oiling. Assembly is certainly made easier with the plastic dowel they provide, but you don't need it if you have small enough fingers to stabilize the main spring. (You will know what I'm talking about if you have a P22 or you watch enough field strip videos on YouTube)

In all, I'm very happy with my purchase and would recommend this firearm to anyone looking for a 22lr semi.

Just picked mine up today after a nice 72 hour wait. 200 rounds of CCI mini-mag and no FTF, FTE, or FTL. Accuracy was good. It's a AH (2007) and I was using the short slotted A mags and a long slotted B mag. No issues with any of them.

You guys are having better luck than my nephew. He has had one for a few months and I think he has yet to run a full mag through it without it jamming. He's tried all sorts of different ammo and none will feed reliably. I keep telling him to send it back to Smith.

Tell him to store it for a week or two with the slide locked back. It made all the dif in the world for mine.

Thanks. I'll tell him to try that. It has pretty much soured me for that model, and I'm looking for a compact .22 auto but there isn't much to choose from.
The P22 is an excellent choice. You might also be able to find a used Walther TPH if you are lucky.
