I was under the impression that it was only legal in VA to hunt with a shotgun with a 3 round capacity, 1 in the chamber and 2 in the magazine. I was told by a friend today that you only have to have the 3 round capacity if you're hunting migratory birds, anything else the capacity doesn't matter.
Is thus true? If not, have any changes occurred in regards to that law?

It's important to check at the state level. VA may only require a 3 shot limit on migratory birds, but CA requires a 3 shot limit on everything, including big game with slugs.

    Check your local regs.

Here in ohio we have the 3 shell limit for migratory birds as well as for deer. It's my understanding that most states are that way or going that direction.

IIRC on migratory birds the three shell limit is a federal game regulation.

not 100% for sure that is correct though. but always consult your states game laws to to be sure.

internet advice is free, but it may not always be right!:p

Since migratory birds cross several states, they are controlled by Federal standards. Enforced by the states, but rules are set by Federals.

Yes, here in MO. to hunt migratory birds you have to have both State & Federal migratory bird stamps............
