Why are AK type rifles and SKS's always grouped together when they have nothing mechanically in common other than the round they fire? Sure, they are both gas piston operated but so are alot of other semi-auto rifles including some AR's.

Um...Because they both originate from post WWII soviet engineering, both fire the same round and were both used against our service personnel in S/E Asia. That little disagreement over Indochina is still on the minds of those who were there.

And AK-47...why not run over the Introduction section before trying to start any real contoiversial topic threads. You'll get a warmer welcome if you do. We all have pretty thick skin here but it doesnt mean we want trollers and flies hanging around.

The SKS was actually developed during WWII. It was fielded in very limited amounts in the invasion of Berlin.

Hence the designation SKS-43 and the ammo called M-43. Like the StG-44 it was ahead of its time.

Well, you started to answer your own question, but you should have kept going in your head before posting. As Robo said, both are from the same time period and both are Soviet weapons. In addition, both are still imported from similar geographic regions, both rifles are intended for the same purpose (short, mid range fire) and both are commonly desired by modern (similar) of shooters of common taste.

Plus Patrick Sweeney wrote a book tiled "The AK & SKS". What more do you want?

Because they both have hard K's in their names?
