just bought my first stripped lower, it's a Spike's Tactical. once i buy a lower parts kit then i'll be looking at getting a complete upper. i want the A3/A4 flattop mid length 16" barrel 5.56, not sure the twist rate yet....kind of confusing as i don't know the type of bullets i want to shoot. but looking to spend up to $500 on a complete upper. DSArms looks to be the cheapest i found, but are they good quality? or should i look elsewhere?

the dealer i bought the lower receiver from is a Spikes dealer, so if Spike's has good quality complete uppers i may just get from them.

this build will be used for self/home defense and some range time. any help is appreciated.

Buy an AR-15 build kit. They can usually be had for about $550 and include a complete upper and lower parts kit with buttstock.

I like BCM. Midwest Industries has some for $459

Not sure if these are A3/A4 (don't remember), but they are what I have. They function flawlessly.

They have free shipping for it too.

PSA has a complete rifle kit minus the lower for $499 this weekend. $600 for a complete AR just can't be beat right now...

I too need a complete upper for cheap, i just finished building my lower last week.. Got a "blemished" PSA lower with complete parts kit for $99. Need a left handed upper to go with, I'm thinking a Stag Arms model 3HL for $495 including BCG & charging handle..

yea was looking at them on the BCM website, same price. i may go with them.

right now i only see a complete kit for $650, but one reason for building instead of buying an AR is cause i don't have all the funds up front.

You do realize that these uppers DO NOT come with the BCG which will cost you an additional $130.00 to $200.00????

Wait until Labor Day. Many places advertise specials especially Palmetto State Armory and usually will have some uppers and kits at a real good price.

    jsesurplus.com, surplusammo.com, aimsurplus.com are good also.

A few days ago, they had a complete rifle kit minus the lower for $515 shipped. I couldn't pass it up so I ordered one for my daughter.

You'll need a bolt carrier group, and a charging handle.

For the BCG, I recommend a BCM (full auto) BCG. They are very well made. They made be a little hard to find though. Before the panic, they are about $140-$160. Now they are about $180-$200. You MAY be able to find one closer to pre panic prices if you shop around.

In case your wondering why I suggested you get a full auto BCG vs a semi auto, a full auto BCG is heavier than the semi auto BCG. This means it will travel slower, and thus be a little more reliable.

As for the charging handle, I use a BCM gunfighter with a medium latch. A LOT of people swear by them.

thanks a lot for the suggestions.

for an extra $219, BCM includes a charging handle and a BCG, but they don't say which one. http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/BCM-16-Mid-Length-Upper-Receiver-Group-p/bcm-urg-mid-16.htm
