So I have decided on a Bushnell scope for my 308. They make the same scope in a short action version. After talking to Bushnell, the only difference is the tube length. So my question:

Does tube length matter, and why? Specs are identical.

If all other factors are the same, the only consideration I can think of is ring spacing on your mount.

I've wonder this myself. Why have the longer model at all? Unless, as treehugger49 just mentioned...the ring spacing on the short version won't fit the long action rifles.

As previously mentioned it is the space available for the rings. With two piece mounts the distance between the rings is fixed and only way to adjust for proper eye relief is to slide the scope back and forward in the rings until correct. The short tube could cause issues depending on you and/or the rifle. A one-piece base may allow slightly wider range of movement since the ring spacing/placement has more variation.
