I was at bass pro. (don't roast me as this is the bps that won't sell to wisconsin) I saw a savage 93R in 17 hmr anyone shoot this gun 400 bucks seems like a deal. 400 is kinda far off but a hell of a lot cheaper to shoot than my 12 ga. Also this would be my first rifle. What are the ranges for the 17 hmr round? The only rifle I shot was a remington 700 in .270 what are the differences between the rounds?

17hmr is right inbetween 22lr and 22wmr. great for dispatching squirrels rabbits nutria and other very small game. but thats about it. it should never be used on deer sized game. in most states its illegal to use a rimfire for deer hunting.

you can prolly do waaay better than that price online. bps prices are very inflated

Buckethead, Try the Cabela's in Hoffman Estates or the Gander Mt. in Rockford.

PS: You may want to look at the Model 25.

I had that same rifle probably years older. It had the accutrigger. Very good shooter. Not as cheap to shoot as you would like to think. Extra mags were @ 15.00 dollars each 2~3 years ago. I would feel comfortable shooting 150+ yards with it. I'm sure others will say it can be accurate farther out. I would look for a used one. 250.00~300.00 w/scope is common down here.

I may just look for a used 270. I would like to use it on larger game like deer. Thanks for the info. And anything is cheaper than a 12 ga. 60 bucks for 50 slugs. Vs. the 15 it is for 50 of these rounds.

Yes, but like others said above, you are pigeon holed into a few hunting choices.

A 308 would be cheaper to shoot than a 270 if cost is your biggest factor. There wont be much difference between the cost to shoot the 270 and the 12 gauge. Of course you could just buy a 22lr for practice and fun. Shoot aspirins at 50 yards if you want a challenge. A Cheerio on a string makes a good target also.

Unless you are going for bear a 270 or 30-06 will do the job.

Cabelas has remington 770 with scope in stock for 300 comes in .243, .270, 7mm rem mag, 30-6 and .300. Whats lolthe difference between a 770 and a 700? Price isn't an issue as long as I'm not paying over 60 bucks for 50 rounds. Lol. 5 slugs for 6 bucks a box... I know my cousins 270 50 rounds was about 40. Much better than my 3" magnum slugs.

Spend the extra for a m700. I have never heard a good thing about the 770. Marlin and savage offer great products aswell.

If you liked the savage 93, why not check into a 110 or a varient. Savage makes good rifles and would be cheaper than the remington.

7mm rem mag is a great round for when you have to reach out to hit game but 60 bucks for 50 slugs should be many years worth of deer. Not a play toy. Don't llike ILL gunlaws so not even sure whats egal anymore but a savage 22 bolt will put tree rats in the pot and fun to shot in general. The 17hmr is a fine and accurate small game/ critter killer out to 150 yards , may 200 yards but by no means a deer rifle. But it or the 22 are cheap to shoot if you use that 12ga is a fun gun.

I am looking for out of state and I'm not familiar with rifle rounds. But I'm looking for either a 270 30-6 or a 300

Buy a browning a bolt 300win on sale at cabelas for 550 it's a heck of a rifle for that price. You also could by a Thompson center venture for 489 they are sweet rifles. You have to search it on cabelas because it won't show up under bolt action rifles for some reason.
