sad news. NEARK gun club est-1974 is now closing.
located on city property at the old ww2 aux army airfield in walnut ridge ark, FAA announced this week that its within the approach of its city airport runway and poses a risk to aviators. also closing is the golf course/club that was the old officers club for the base, citing too many people are near the crash zone on approach.
this is the kicker.....i shot there 2 weeks ago as a guest for the first time. went 50 straight too.
great guys, small and cozy 1 field range too.
    now the final kicker....

the air strip lands one plane a week. the rest of the airfield is abandoned and used for storage.
and, that one plane weekly that lands gets to choose 3 runways depending on wind.
the runway next to the club is decaying!

i am so glad im in the ozarks.

The FAA is typical for "no brain, no common sense" federal agencies. The (not so) new Austin Bergstrom International Airport (ABIA) opened on the old site of the Bergstrom Air Force Base. They closed the golf course and mandated the landfills just to the South close w/in 2 years. 10 years later they are going strong. Birds flying around the landfill are a very real threat to air traffic, but they have not forced the land fills to close.

Our qual range used to be on the South end of the runway at Bergstrom. It was an M-16 range for the AF before they went indoor with .22 LR converstions. They would get all kinds of upset when they found bullets on the runway. We leased the site for $1/year. When they started the closure of the base, we lost our lease.
