Can a civilian own a 50 Cal rifle under the basic ffl form and background check laws or is there some kind of permit that I don't know about?

Sure you can own a .50 caliber, unless there are local or state laws that forbid it. Good luck.

While certain large bore firearms (larger than 0.50 inches) with no sporting purpose are treated as class III Destructive Devices, (.55 Boys anti-tank rifle) the .50 BMG is not in that category. While bullet is 0.510, bore diameter is 0.50. There are no extraordinary Federal laws on possesion

Price of rifle, scope amd ammo may make you cry, along with finding someplace you can shoot one.

I've got a .50 cal muzzle loader. Probably not what you were thinking if though. But it is definitely legal in most states if not call of them.

IIRC, California is the only state that currently restricts civilian ownership of the 50 BMG rifles. hence the reason Barrett came out with the Barrett 416.

better break out the checkbook though! rifle and ammo are expensive.

Axxe is right, only a no-go in California. Last I checked Barrett M82A1/M107 was going for around $10,000 and ammo was around $4 a round. Scope will prob be $5,000 and up for a worthy one. Good luck!

I think the Barrett 50 Cal rifles are smaller than they used to be. Has anybody noticed that or am I going crazy? Or am I thinking of military grade vs civilian grade

Yup no .50's here, although a guy from out of state brought one once, so illegal but it was so awesome.

Randy, I think they have a new version that has a shorter barrel and is lighter weight. Not sure though.

I am talking about the base model m82a1 rifle. I have seen pictures and videos of the new ones and they seem smaller than the older ones or the rifles from the movies, TV or the first ones that came out on the regular civilian market.

They can easily cost over $12,000 with a scope. The cost to reload is very expensive. The brass and bullets and powder use is costly. The primers are $1.50 each or more. It can cost $6.00 a round to reload. They are wonderful toys. We have a 2,000 meter range with lots of iron to shoot. It is defiantly an expensive sport. Try hiding this expense from your wife?
