Per another thread and much thanks to JPyle for sending me some ammo to test.

First up is the Federal (siver box) 135gr JHP.

Damn! That's not bad at all. Almost 6 inches of full penetration with some nice mushrooming.

Thanks to Skull for taking the time and doing the testing.

Next is the much heralded Hornady Critical Defense and basically the reason for the testing. These are 165gr FTX.

Ouch...that looks painful. Skully, how wide across are the mushroomed Hornadys, they look like they about doubled in size. Not to pimp the Hornady but I can see where clogging could be an issue with standard HPs, even fired they retain a "cup."

Did you get the handgun for testing or use the Carbine? Sorry for all the questions...:)

The Federals fragmented, which is never bad measured out at .400" but mushroomed to .670". In increase of 1.675%, impressive. But recovered bullets weighed in at 112gr, not really good for 135gr start.

The Hornady Critical Defense measured .396" but mushroomed to .685" for a really impressive 1.73%. Retained weight was 163.2gr. Definately impressive when coupled with the 9" penetration.

Just for s&g, I shot a 180gr FMJ and it fully penetrated the media and an additional 3" of dry media set up behind the wet papers. That is the bad guy, the wall behind the bad guy and the person behind the wall.

Done with the carbine at 25 yards. The pistol could not make it. Still I am impressed with the Hornady's, in the .40 at least.

The .45 185gr FTX at 7 yards. Mushroomed from .446" to .785" an increase of 1.76% but less penetration than my PDX1's and 183.6gr retention vs 229.2gr and 1.70% and over 8" penetration.

Thanks, Brian. I do believe that I will be buying some of the Hornady Critical Defense in .40 S&W. Seriously, I was impressed with them. Not my first line of defense, but there if needed. Great expansion, weight retention and penetration. The energy transfer and wound channel will put down most men in no time, imo. I would love to see some testing done on other ammo like we did for the .45 Kings. :)

Good stuff my friend. As my Sig P239 in .40 is one of my carry guns, this test is quite timely. It's currently loaded with 165gr Gold Dots but I think I may pick up a box of Critical Defense as I'm impressed with your findings...

Again, the credit goes to JPyle for providing the ammo and to NGIB for finding the fps chart . I would like to see other brands tested as well. The difference between the Federals and the Hornays is like night and day. I would not be surprised to find out that other high end defense rounds perform just as well as the Hornadys. I shot the fmj to see how much over penetration there would be and I was not surprised to see the bullet travel though all of the testing media.

I had fun. Let's see some testing of other fortys.

Skull, did I read this right? The new Hornandy ammo in your .45 was less effective in terms of ballistic penetration than the stuff you tested in the other thread?

Negative. I have a Sig in .40S&W. I was just wondering if I was reading Skull's report correctly. I love my Ranger's, but was interested in this new round. If it isn't going as deep into the bad guy, that is my opinion, is a bad thing and I wil stick with the Rangers. ;)

Yes, JD, but they are apples and oranges. I tested JPyle's 185gr here. The other thread was full 230 grains. But there was a full one inch less penetration with the 185gr.
