Let's see, in 1994 I was about 13 years old, and not all that aware of what was going on outside of school, homework, sports practices, etc.

When the gun ban bill was introduced, did the market go into a frenzy like it is now? were ARs and AKs and 15 round magazines for Beretta's, Glocks, etc. flying off the shelves?

what was it like during that time?


All I can vaguely remember is our next door neighbor bought an AK-47 because "pretty soon, we won't be able to buy one anymore" that was his only reasoning. --now, at least he was an actual gun enthusiast, and had several other rifles and handguns.

It is called a assualt weapons ban but it covered a lot more than that. Mostly capacities of magazines on both rifles and pistols.During the ban you could not buy a new magazine for a 10-22 over ten rounds and manufacturing thel was illegal. The existing ones were not confiscated and the price of them went sky high. My brother was stationed in germany at the time and bought a CZ 75. The 15 round magazine was illegal to bring into the united states so none were being imported back then. Because he was a GI he was allowed to bring it back.
You have fienstien and pelosi and Biden all brain storming the new assault weapons ban and I assure you it will be way more restrictive than the first.All bills have a basic name but many things slipped in with them. Your guess is as good as any ones what they will load into this new one. Just personaly guessing I would say this time around since there are so manyh more people who own ar and simular style rifles and have a lot of magazines. They will make owning the magazines already owned illegal to own now.i doubt if they do a door to door type confiscation but I bet you get caught with one and your in deep trouble. Of course ranges will be forced to ban them or be shut down.
In the original ban there was a stipulation that there would be a study on its effectiveness after a certain period before it could be made a permenant law. By the time it came around for the study to be looked at Bush was in office. The study revealed that less than one pre cent of one percent of fire arms crimes were commited with a ar or simular type rifle the gun nuts call a assault rifle.
Bush refused to sighn it and it was dropped and the gun nuts have been trying to get it going again since. Especialy Hilary Clinton since she was the biggest pusher of it back when she was prersident and Willy was playing with white house aids and cigars and such.
I am also going to guess that no study will be part of the new ban because as the first it will prove very few nuts or other type criminals choose a ar type rifle to commit crime. They dont fit in your pocket or in your poants under a baggy shirt very well.

I can tell you this. I turned 18 in 1998. I didn't have money to buy cool guns (I bought a .22 at Walmart), but I'd go to the range all the time and gawk at all the super cool ARs and AKs. I'd rent them to shoot on the range too.
When the AWB ban ended, I didn't know much about guns, but I heard all this crap about machine guns, etc... I had a job so I decided to buy one.
I went to the gun store and asked about full auto. They laughed in my face, then explained the 'ban' to me. He pulled an AK off the shelf and showed it to me. It was one he had during the ban.

Right. I'm well aware of what was IN the gun ban, I bought my first AR under the ban. the only thing that made it different than a pre-ban weapon was that the front sight A-frame did not have a bayonet lug on it, and the barrel had no muzzle brake at the end. I've heard that pre-ban ARs were at least machined out to accept the full-auto trigger groups, but I don't know that that is true or not, I would expect that change to have happened with the 1986 full auto "ban/registration"

When I bought my AR in 2002, There were probably 30 of them in stock in the store and no huge demand for them.

Normal capacity magazines, (20-30 rd) were hard to find and expensive. Even "neutered" mags, 10 rd were expensive for a while.

There was the inevitable panic buying of course. An officer I worked with took out a loan to buy about $5,000 worth of reloading components.

Of course we survived it, but it was a real PITA.

it was proven that the AWB of 1994 did nothing in preventing crime and now they want another one, that will prove just as ineffective as the last one did.

Bush did not refuse to sign the ASW Ban. He said he would sign it if it got to his desk. The Republicans in Congress made sure it would not reach his desk.
The Clinton-Gore AWB was a joke. You could get anything you wanted. It did push prices up for awhile. New uppers with out bayonet lugs or flash suppression could be bought any where. It was illegal to use post ban uppers on preban lowers. Before the law took effect preban parts were sold at low prices.
