Out of those two, I'd go with the S&W. From what I've read, the SD9VE is extremely reliable, light weight, and just an all around good gun. I have a S&W SW40VE which is a similar gun. I haven't been able to use it much (just got it), but it's been a fantastic gun so far. You may want to upgrade the trigger with an apex trigger kit though. They're about $20, and can improve your trigger quite a bit. The trigger on mine is pretty long and heavy, so I'm going with the apex kit to lighten it up.

    Safety? Bwahahahahahaha!!!! :p

No external safety what so ever. They are basically S&W's version of the Glock, only better IMHO. The trigger is more than heavy enough for the gun to be used safely for concealed carry. Just use the safety between your ears. AKA, common sense.

I have the sd40 and love it. It is my primary HD gun. I have a little more thatln 1000 rounds in it and no mis fires. Great gun for the value IMHO.

Of those two I would choose the S&W. However if you really want a thumb safety and a high quality gun in the same price range you might want to take a look at a Ruger SR9.

Thanks for the input. After getting them both in my hand, i like the s&w a ton. But i think im gonna go with the m&p 9mm. Only bc the safety on it...

+1 & add 1 ---For a easy to conceal 9mm step down in size to the SR9C ;)
Forgot- I had a SD9 & had no problems with it----looong trigger travel but as stated that's a safety feature---
I don't care for Taurus SIMI AUTOS but that's just me-

I would not overlook Kahr pistols. The OP appears to be a shopper on a budget. Not trying to sway the OP. I just want to see him get as much pistol as possible with his money.

My max is about 550. Im gonna go check out the ruger though. Ive got a few weeks before i make a purchase. Im just trying to get as much info as i can before i do purchase. This will be my first weapon, so i want something that is reliable and easy to shoot and carry.

 ...is it for carry or for home defense? I you plan on carrying it around you home or yard, get something that won't weigh you down too much. Either which you mentioned are fine. But if you don't plan on carrying it around...get a full sized pistol or revolver....for that "bump" in the night.

    I see.......
Around the house and yard, I have one of my carry guns.....on me or within arms reach, depending on what I am doing. I will ride around the tractor with my holster. But at night....my carry gun is at bedside, the full size is 4 steps away in a hidden safe and my shotgun is behind the door.

I went looking around today. The s&w m&p9c felt really good in my hand...but then the salesman put a glock m26 and m19 in my hand. All i can say is wow. They felt way better than anything else...

Ive looked at the springfield stuff...but around me the prices are a bit out of my price range. I can get the a glock or m&p for just under 500.

Good price! I'm in MS and our glocks and springfield are both around $600 to $650 new. I went with the springfield cause of the grip safety and also with it not engaged you can't wrack one in the barrel! I have kids around so I don't leave one in the barrel!
