I have been looking around and am looking at either the Taurus or the RIA? I am working with a budget of about $550. At that price the Taurus has the extended beaver tail, skeletonizes trigger, and extended safety. The RAI is just the GI model. What do you guys think? Is there any other makes I should look at in that price range?

Thanks in advance for all your help.

You need to consider high standard too. Mr. Wray has one he swears by, I've handled one in a store and was quite impressed with it. It's another filipino gun, in around the same price range.

    It's also a mill spec.

I never fired a Taurus 1911 but I had another model and absolutely hated it (Millenium). I currently have a RIA 1911a2 double stack 45 and love this one. It's a GI model so the sights are smaller than I wanted but definitely accurate. I paid $550 for it. My brother paid a little less for his RIA and it has the extended beaver tail, Novak sights, skeletonized trigger, and ambi safety (single stack). I have other 1911s that cost up to triple my RIA but it is still one of my favorites...it used to be my carry but now sleeps next to me as my home defense. Big and bulky...about 3 lbs but even my wife loves firing it.

Thanks for the mention trip, and my High Standard is still flawless. Its also made by Armscor, ive been nothing but happy with mine.. I bought mine brand new for $499,and have added to it. I have a good friend that wanted to shoot it so i let him, then he made me go to the LGS with him and he put one on layaway.

I have the Taurus, had zero problems out of it. Not to say its a great gun or a piece of junk but I am very happy with mine.

I have owned a Taurus 1911 and an Armscor-made 1911. Sold the Armscor and still have the Taurus. I've got about 5500 rounds through my Taurus and have yet to have a problem with it. Taurus gives you a lot more features than the RIA. And you can also get a stainless version, which RIA does not offer.

    can't speak for the RIA

But my nephew bought one about 7 years ago the Taurus Model: 1191109 when he bought his it was 519 maybe 550 but this model has a whole lot of extras included, he's never had a problem with it shoots it about every week or 2 (he reloads) like his Daddy. In his hands it's a tack driver (young eyes) I like it and have consider it but my next one will be a Commander model got to get one of those 4 1/4" barrels:cool: Here's a link tothat Taurus

    Rocks rock!

IMHO, get the Rock. They are inexpensive, dependable and standard. So many guns have gone custom, that they are not even 1911's anymore. There is great comfort in knowing that if something goes wrong, any gs can probably fix it or has the part. A good 1911 will last forever if left alone. When we start monkeying around is when we get into unknown territory.
Get the Rock. leave it alone, and be happy.
