Trying to decide between the S&W M&P 15-22 or Ruger 10/22 with some tactical stock. Any advice would be much appreciated!

Both are different but a 10/22 can basically be made into an AR. I own a 10/22 and have a rail system on it. I would go with the m&p though. Up to you really, both outstanding firearms.

S&W all the way. I'm not a big fan of the 10/22 in any configuration. My S&W is an awesome rifle and my only current semi-auto .22. I've gone through several other semis but the S&W stays put.

I really haven't heard a bad thing about the S&W they must have hit this out of the park. The old school part of me says 10/22 so just fighting that battle lol.

My son has a 10/22 that used to be mine. I put an Archangel stock with a bipod, and a red top on it. He loves it. The nice thing about the 10/22 is you can really make it yours.

What do you want to get out of it?

If you want low recoil, inexpensive and quiet practice that gets you more time with the same controls and configuration as an AR, then go for the S&W.

If you want a general purpose .22 then the 10/22 is a good adaptable platform. It is easy to cut teeth on as far as doing your own smithing.
Parts abound. It can be configured for matches, hunting, tactical practice, etc.

I had a S&W 15/22 and it was quite fun to shoot........ but I sold it and built this custom 10/22.

Best thing I could have done! I love the AR platform as those who frequent the AR15 sub forum can attest, but this thing will outshoot my 15/22 in every aspect.

I have the m&p and love it. Put a red dot sight on it and it's accurate and fun to shoot. Have shot the 10/22 it's okay but I'm glad I have the m&p

If I was buying another Semi-Auto, it would be the S&W. But, already having a 10/22 and a Mossberg 702 I'm customizing, you can't go wrong with any way you configure the Ruger. The Ruger feed system is
"Flawless" with the Rotary Mags, and with the BX25-ext. Mags. I hear the 50 rd. Butler Creek's are junk-ola, never had one. Someone is coming out with a 110 round Drum. If you want Capacity above 25 Rds you might want the Ruger instead. If you only want 25's and 10's, either one and your GTG...

If by tactical stock you mean polymer+retractable, there is no reason (I can think of) to choose the 10/22. The 15-22 has it all, by birthright. It is also easier to clean, and it has a naturally fit 25 (30?) round mag. The banana clip on the 10/22 is again an add-on.

if you are looking for a AR15 type then I guess it would have to be the S&W , but a nice gun that seems to eat anything { mine will } then the 10 22 get my vote , how about a SR 22 , in the rifle not hand gun , and the Ruger BX mags work great

I have considered the SR22 but I haven't found much on them. Anyone have any thoughts on them?

The 10/22 has a proven history of being a reliable rifle. It was fun building two of these with my son. ImageUploadedByFirearms Talk1394894164.175200.jpg his is all black. These go to the range every time we go.

If you want a tactical .22 I would definitely go with the M&P. Why modify a 10/22 when the 15/22 is ready to go out of the box. Plus the M&P functions and breaks down just like a standard AR. Makes for a great trainer. I have a few thousand rounds down the barrel of mine with zero issues.

If I ever wear out my 10/22 I will consider the S&W. I am afraid I won't live long enough to make that decision.

I always liked the 10/22 and the endless mods you can do to them. So I went with the ruger in a troy chassis just because I didnt like polymer. It is my favorite gun to shoot out of my collection. And much cheaper to shoot than my bushmaster 450 lol. Either way both would be a lot of fun. Mine was so much fun I went overkill and put a acog on it lol.
